The Quick and The Dead

The Quick and The Dead; a modern variation on the typical classic Western, produced and directed by Sam Raimi and Sharon Stone, who also stars in the film alongside Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe and Leonardo Di Caprio. However this film is no typical western, the film is untypical in many ways; for example, one of the main protagonists is a woman, although there are many features you would expect to find in a Western. The film is set in a classic Western town, called Redemption, which is ruled by evil Herod, played by Gene Hackman, aka the bad guy. He is wicked and holds a special competition every year with a large cash prize. As expected he cheats to make sure that he wins every time, protecting his reputation and keeping himself free from harm, but this year that is to change. Enter Ellen, the female protagonist and "good guy" of the quick and the dead. She intends to make certain that Herod's reign comes to an end. With the help of Cort, the bad guy turned good, she seeks revenge for the tragic death of her father several years previously. Together Ellen and Cort invent a cunning plot to deceive Herod. They succeed and the last battle of the film ends with Herod's death scene. Ellen then rides away, leaving Cort as the new sheriff.

Westerns are a big part of the film industry. When you think of Westerns you often think of typical features of a film such as guns and gun fights (sometimes on horseback), violence, horses, trains (and train robberies), bank robberies, stagecoaches, shoot-outs and showdowns, criminals and sheriffs and distinctive western clothing and settings. Typical western clothing includes chaps, spurs and boots, also associated with horse riders. Typical settings include lonely forts, ranches, the saloon, the jail and the small-town main street. The plot of a western film is laced with fast paced action. It is normally full of conflict - good vs. bad, cowboys vs. Indians, villain vs. hero, sheriff vs. gunslinger, individuals vs. the community to illustrate a few. The heroes in Westerns are often sheriffs or skilled, fast-drawing gunfighters. Its unlikely for the "bad guy" to win. They are normally courageous, ethical, sturdy, firm people, often with responsible sidekicks.

There are a lot of characters in The Quick and The Dead, although many only appear once or twice before they are killed. These characters were put in mainly to emphasise the strengths of the four main protagonists they fight. The characters are also both typical and untypical. For instance the conflict between the two main characters is very typical as is the underlying motive for revenge and the past history between them. The idea of a good and bad guy is also something often found in Westerns. Yet having a woman play any of the main protagonists ...
