On their way a truck driver was always bothering them impolitely. They gave him a lesson by destroying his truck.
In the escaping, Thelma became a brave and determined woman from a timid and obedient wife. Both Thelma and Louise became two criminals with quite a few of criminal records.
At last they reached the Grant Gorge. The police caught up with and surround them. It seemed that they had no other choice but getting arrested. But they refused to surrender. They drove their car and rushed to the cliff.
This is a movie for the women. What the two heroines did was a kind of revolt against the male-dominating world. Obviously, male is the stronger one of the two sexes in the modern society. Both Thelma and Louise were harmed by this society. They were the victims. Thelma would have been raped by that man if Louise didn’t turn out in time. At home, it was obvious that Thelma couldn’t get enough respect by her husband. Her husband was very rough to her. There was a detail in the movie. Some policemen were watching film on TV in Thelma’s home. Suddenly Thelma’s husband shifted the TV to a sports channel completely habitually. Then he realized that the people who were sharing the TV with him were the police officers but not his wife any more. So he set it back embarrassedly. Here we can see Thelma’s lower position in the daily life. JD was not simply a thief or a robber. He was a representative of the male. When JD came out, Thelma was still a naive woman. JD took this advantage and gained her trust and love by fraud. And he took the opportunity to steal their money. Man always cheats women. This kind of things happens frequently in our life.
Different from Thelma, Louise was a more mature and sophisticated woman. She was much calmer than Thelma facing difficult situations. I guess one reason for her sophistication was that she had got more experience. She was once violated in Tennessee. That’s why she refused to went cross this state to Mexico though this way was the shortest one. And that was why that man’s words could offend her to lose control of herself. So the real reason of her criminal was her being hurt by the men. The real murder was not Louise but the man who had hurt her and the man who was hurting Thelma. Louise was not guilty in fact but she would be sentenced guilty in law, in the male-dominating society.
So they chose to escape.
In the end, they failed to escape from the law. They were surrounded by the police. If they gave in to the police, in was likely that they would be imprisoned for quite a few years. But after all they could get freedom again when they were released after serving sentence. Further more, Thelma’s crime was not serious. But through their experience, they had known more about the society. They knew that the women could never get real freedom because the whole society is a large prison for women. Male is stronger than female and the society is a male-centered society.
So they started their car and drove to the cliff, to the beautiful scenery of the western America, but not the police.
There cannot be a stronger objection.
