Which film technique does M. Night Shyamalan use to create tension in 'The Sixth Sense'?

'The Sixth Sense' was directed by M. Night Shyamalan in 1999. He also directed 'The Village' (2004), 'Unbreakable' (2000) and 'Wide Awake' (1998). In 'The Sixth Sense' the director uses colour, camera angles, sound and lighting to create tension in the film.

'The Sixth Sense' is about Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) who is determined to help a young boy named Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), after the suicide of his ex-patient Vincent Grey (Donnie Wahlberg). Vincent and Cole share the same problem - they see dead people!

One of the themes in 'The Sixth Sense' is communication. There are many different forms of communication in this film, such as Malcolm communicating with his wife, Anna Crowe (Olivia Williams); Cole with his mother, Lynn Sear (Toni Collette), and the Ghosts with Cole so he can help them. Shyamalan himself said says that the point of this film is everyone should learn to communicate.

In 'The Sixth Sense' what goes in front of the camera is very important as it helps play a part in creating tension. In this scene Shyamalan says that the camera is Cole. There is a 'sucking' moment every time Cole steps back. Each time this happens it is important for Malcolm's reactions to be precise as it gives the audience the feeling that Cole is slipping away from Malcolm.

Another part of the film where the eyes are used for narration is the scene with Vincent Grey. There is a close up of Malcolm's face as he is trying to recall his ex-patient. With this shot the audience can see how much Malcolm is trying to remember, this could also show the audience how important Malcolm thinks it is to remember.

Camera angles are used in order to give the audience the feeling that someone or something is present. In the beginning, when Anna was at the wine rack, the camera is behind it and ...
