ALBERT:
Mr._____ is often described as a handsome man. Who only desires a comfortable home and conventional life standards, a mother for his children and a wife to look after the house, but he never really is happy with these standards because we discover he is in love with Shug Avery (a blues singer) and has been so for many years ,but he doesn’t marry her for the public’s opinion of her (especially his father, whom we might think was very abusive to him). He stubbornly sticks to old-fashioned mentalities of treating woman and male authority, that he doesn’t take the time to notice the effect it has on other people for example celie, I personally belive that he loathes the life he leads and hates himself for not taking chances but somehow takes it out on other people which alternatively makes him feel superior and good about himself.he also does a terrible thing to celie where he hides her sister’s letters from her hence cutting them off from each other.
The reader notices a big change in Mr.____ character after Celie leaves him and comes back to visit on Sofia and Harpo, he is a completely different man and decides to begin his life afresh and stat listening to people and to start relationships on people he has never taken the time to get to know. This is a dramatic change in his character which leads on to a better life for him.
SHUG:
Shug is a famous blues/jazz singer and is introduced about 6 years after Celie moved at Mr.____’s house but is talked about much earlier in the novel, Celie idolized her from when she found her photograph and writes she is “the most beautiful woman I ever saw” . She is independent ,strong and single minded.she is one of the strongest characters in the book and the most outrageous. She is more or less sexually free and is defiantly unashamed of it she enjoys Albert’s company whether married or not.
In the beginning of the novel she is shown to be a really bad ,“nasty” character (she mentions how ugly Celie is) she is very impolite and has dubious manners and morals and dresses slutty and is shunned away by her own parents. But Celie sees something more in Shug when Celie looks at the photograph not only is she amazed by her beauty but also because it reminds her of her “mama” and in many instances in the novel she is compared to Celie’s mother but unlike Celie’s mom she is not allowing men to oppress her and be dominated by anyone but rather shines with individuality and strength.
A deeper analysis of Shug would show that even after that thick outer coldness and sharp-tongue she is actually a very warm person at heart. This warm personality is shown when she falls ill of a “nasty women’s disease” and Celie takes care of her, where we see her very appreciative and reciprocates the care and attention later on, there is a very important contrast in her character here from the very mean one to the polite warm-hearted one. Despite her spontaneity and unpredictable-ness shug remains celi’s closest friend throughout the novel.
