Another agency was the FAO, which advises on all aspects of agriculture. It raises standards of living, increases agricultural production, and facilitates food distribution among the peoples of the world. Some of it more important projects have included the combating of locusts in South America, the introduction of school meals in Greece and the development of irrigation and improved farming techniques in south-east Asia. However, the FAO cannot stop the famines and droughts which occur and therefore it would not be a hundred percent successful.
Another agency was the UNESCO, which deals with education and attempts to bring the peoples of the world into a closer understanding of one another. It aims to establish a minimum world standard of education including knowledge about agriculture, handcrafts, health, citizenship and world affairs as well as the basic skills of reading, writing and numbers. Through exchange scholarships, international conferences and the exchange of cultural collections, it works to foster international understanding.
Another agency was the IMF and the World Bank, which act as bankers to poorer countries. However, even though the IMF does help, some countries still owe this agency huge amounts of money because the agency lends Third World countries money which are already in debt. Therefore Third World debt is still a huge problem today.
Another agency was the WHO, which trains people in fighting disease. The WHO provided the staff, the centres and the equipment, medicines and drugs which, have been used against cholera epidemics in Egypt as well as providing aid for starving and sick children, attacks on preventable disease and the spreading of knowledge and medical skills among people in the underdeveloped world. However, to be effective it needs an endless supply of money and it cannot prevent famines or floods.
Another agency was the Disarmament Commission, which encourages countries to disarm. However, it has not been very successful because there are still many countries who have not disarmed.
Another agency was the UNICEF, which works for all aspects of the health and welfare of children. It has provided aid for children suffering because of war; suffering from epidemics and hunger; suffering from preventable diseases and in deprival countries it has set up over 40,000 health centres and so helped the work of the WHO.
In conclusion I can say that the agencies have certainly contributed to helping provide a better quality of life for the peoples of the world. For example they have improved working conditions. However, like many of the agencies they have not provided better quality of life for all the peoples of the world and in some cases it’s mainly the more economically developed countries that have a better quality of life. It is many of the Third World countries whose quality of life has not improved. So in my opinion the agencies have not improved the quality of life for the peoples of the world. However, as they are still in progress they will have the chance to do this but they have a lot of work to do if they want to achieve this.
