In modern society, the condition of people’s health and how to maintain healthy into old age has become an important issue for human beings. However, it is affected by a wide variety of factors, from the genes that people inherit from their parents to the climate they live in and the work they do (Deacon, 2004). Nevertheless, there are increasing scientific evidences that show people’s lifestyles play a significant part in how healthy they are now and when they are getting old (NHS Lothian, 2006). A healthy lifestyle is a way of living that reduces the risks of being seriously ill or dying early, and makes people enjoy more aspects of the life (World Health Organization, n.d). According to NHS Lothian (2006), from what people eat and drink, to how much exercise they take, and whether they smoke or take drugs, and how their temperaments are, and whether they are optimistic or not will affect their health. This essay will outline and describe the factors that enable people to maintain a healthy lifestyle into old age, which includes both physical factors and mental factors. It will then argue that mental factors, such as individual personality, attitude to the stress, socialising with others and positive thinking, might play a special and important role in people’s keeping healthy into old age and might promote function of physical factors. This essay will begin with the summation of the physical elements people can keep fit into old age, and then the detailed description of the mental elements will be showed. Finally it will conclude with evaluating the importance and special functions of the mental elements.

To begin with, the physical factors of a healthy lifestyle consist of healthy eating, enough exercise, limited alcohol intake and not smoking. Initially, good health harmonizes with rich nutrition and that means eating a balanced diet can provide the energy, vitamins and minerals which people necessitate (NHS Lothian, 2006). King et al (2009) explained that five portions of fruit and vegetables each day and eating fresh produce rather than processed food might guarantee a healthy diet everyday.                                             ...
