Explain the Different Reactions Of People in Britain to the Policy of Evacuating Children During World War 2
During World War 2 many children and other vulnerable civilians such as pregnant women and mothers with young children were evacuated to the safer country areas. In this essay I will look at the reaction's of many of the many different people involved with the evacuation such as the children evacuated, mothers and the clashes they had with the other parents in their host's family. I will also talk about the host families and what they wanted in return for taking the children in.
When the families first met it would all seem fine but after a very short amount of time the first problems would start to arise. Normally these would revolve around the children and who had the right to punish them. The host mother would normally argue they are in their house and she lays down the rules but the evacuated mother would want to argue that it is her child and she should be the one to deal with the child. To sort out some of these disputes there was an evacuation officer however this would only be needed if the families could not come to some way of sorting the problem out themselves. Other disputes would normally happen in the kitchen when the two mothers clashed about who should cook and what they were having for a certain meal. On the more positive side the people who could get along found it much easier with less work to do they could take some rest whilst the other parent took care of the children or cooked the next meal.
