Appropriate Software and Hardware

To make this project I will need certain types of hardware.  The hardware materials I need are: a monitor, a keyboard, a mouse and a very good high quality printer (maybe an Epson colour laser printer).  I might also need a digital camera, which I will use to take a photo of the shops logo.  Fortunately I have an access to a computer in my school so I don’t have to go to a shop to buy any expensive hardware.

 

There are two different database software packages that are available to me.  These are Microsoft Access and Filemaker Pro.  The advantages and disadvantages are;

  • Microsoft Access - This is a strong candidate for the program I will use, as it is specifically designed for creating databases. It is also a widely used program; therefore help and advice, along with add-ons and upgrades are all available. I will also be able to create a fully relational database; therefore it will suit the requirements of my database. There are, however, some problems with this program. One of my targets is that the database should require no training of any sort for the user; it should be simple and understandable. This would be almost impossible in Access, as it is a very complex program, and needs some sort of understanding on the users part as to how it works. It is also quite difficult to print off queries, and as I have no experience whatsoever in using this program, I myself will have to under go some training in using the program.

  • Filemaker Pro - Although this is not a widely used program, it will probably be the one I will use, due to the fact that it can create easy to use and understandable relational databases for the user. Problems with using this program are that it is an expensive program, and if my user does not have it installed on their computer it might hinder the efficiency of my database as the user would have to buy it and install it. Fortunately, the receptionist’s computer is on the school network and has File Maker installed on it. Another problem is that because it isn’t a Microsoft program, I can’t integrate my database with another program easily, therefore I don’t have the ability to create things such as seating plans showing which seats are booked in Excel using macros and integrating them into my database.

The application I have chosen to use is Filemaker Pro, which is a database application.  I have chosen to use this type of software because of all the features it offers.  My Uncle also agreed with me and he thinks that this project can be very successful.
