Database Project - Analysis

Extracts from this document...

Introduction

Analysis Appropriate Software and Hardware To make this project I will need certain types of hardware. The hardware materials I need are: a monitor, a keyboard, a mouse and a very good high quality printer (maybe an Epson colour laser printer). I might also need a digital camera, which I will use to take a photo of the shops logo. Fortunately I have an access to a computer in my school so I don't have to go to a shop to buy any expensive hardware. There are two different database software packages that are available to me. These are Microsoft Access and Filemaker Pro. The advantages and disadvantages are; * Microsoft Access - This is a strong candidate for the program I will use, as it is specifically designed for creating databases. It is also a widely used program; therefore help and advice, along with add-ons and upgrades are all available. I will also be able to create a fully relational database; therefore it will suit the requirements of my database. There are, however, some problems with this program. One of my targets is that the database should require no training of any sort for the user; it should be simple and understandable. This would be almost impossible in Access, as it is a very complex program, and needs some sort of understanding on the users part as to how it works. ...read more.

He will look in his book and will then transfer them into the database. He will also be able to enter new customers into the database when it is needed. The data that will be input into the database will be divided into two main sections, there will be the data that will be input into the customers file, and data that will be input into the mobile phone's file. People will want to know information about the phones that are available and they might want to know the prices of them. This is why it is important that it is entered in the database. Having entered the customer's names and all their information and all the mobile phones information, my Uncle will be able to enter in new customers as he hopes he will need to, as there will be many customers who want to buy a deal. Data Manipulation The data input into to the members file, with each member will be the following fields: Field Type of Data Limit Description Title Text 3 characters Mr, Mrs and Miss. Three titles for customers. Forename Text 10 characters This is the customer's first names. Surname Text 12 characters This is the customer's last name. D.O.B. Number dd/mm/yyyy The date of birth will be entered. Sex Text 6 characters Either Male or Female. Address Text Unlimited digits and characters This will be where the customer's addresses will be entered, both text and numbers are allowed and the characters will be unlimited. ...read more.

Day Text 8 characters Which day it was purchased. Date Number 2 digits Which date it was purchased. Month Text 8 characters Which month it was purchased. Year Number 4 digits Which year it was purchased. Phone ID Number 8 characters A phone ID will be entered. This will identify the phone without any other sort of information. Contract deal Text Unlimited characters This will state the contract deal that will be brought by a Customer. Manufacturer Text 10 characters Nokia and Samsung are examples. Cost Number (Price format) __.__ The cost of the overall deal. Output The reports should be viewable on screen with an option to print them. Certain things should be viewable to the User, for example he should be able to view, which phones he has sold the most and which contract deals have been sold the most. The reports will group so that it is easier for the User to understand. Backup/Security Strategy. In order to ensure the safety and security of my project, I will have to consider back up devices. The memory stick can be used to save edited things. It could also be saved on the computer. The database will have a password that only the User will know. This will stop unauthorised users from entering it. I will make sure my work is saved regularly when I am working on it, for the unlikely event of a power cut or the computers crashing. The password will have to be changed quite a lot of times so that no - one finds it out. ...read more.
