Introduction

Osmosis in potato Aim I am going to investigate osmosis in potato chips placed in different concentration solutions of sugar , the factor we are going to change in the experiment is the concentration of sugar in each solution. I am going to investigate the movement of osmosis through a semi permeable membrane. Prediction I predict that in my experiment the rate of osmosis will decrease as the amount of sugar in the solution increases , I predict that when the potato chip is placed in the sugar solution the water inside will leave due to osmosis and the chip will weigh less then when it entered the solution. Middle

Firstly we cut 15 bits of potato with the cork borer to make potato cylinders , then we cut 15 bits into equal lengths of 3 cm , we then recorded the weights of each of the bits of potato and made sure they were 2.5 grams . We placed 3 pieces of potato in each solution of sugar , they where 1m , 2m , 3m , 4m , 5m we placed 3 in each to make it a fair test so that we would have reliable results. We left the potato in the solution for 30 minutes , to make it a fair test we placed the potato in the solution quickly so that one piece did not have a longer time in the solution than the others. After 30 minutes we emptied each container with the potato in it and dabbed the potato down with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture, we then measured the length and weight of each piece of potato and recorded our results in a table. ...read more.

Conclusion

higher concentration solution of glucose , the higher the concentration in the solution the more weight and length the potato chip lost. Conclusion To conclude I can say that the movement of water through a semi permeable membrane , is affected by the concentration of the glucose solution. The higher the concentration of the solution the more weight and length the potato will lose. This is because water molecules have kinetic energy , and they are always moving around in a liquid or a gas form , the greater the concentration of water molecules in the solution , the greater the kinetic energy . This means as the concentration of sugar increases in a solution , as the concentration of glucose in each solution increases, the water in that solution is less able to move to the potato, causing water from the potato to move to the solution, decreasing its length, weight and width. ?? ?? ?? ??
