Describe the problems faced by the Bolshevik Government in the year that followed their seizure of power in October 1917 (20 Marks)

There were a number of significant problems faced by the Bolshevik Government in October, 1917.

Firstly, the problem of World War One was heavy on the shoulders of the Bolshevik party. The treaty of Brest – Litovsk was a solution devised by the Bolsheviks to retrieve Russia from the War. This had positive and negative aspects. Positives aspects were that the army could not be used against them by Russian generals. The negative aspects were that the German army was free to walk into Russia and take what it wanted. Russia wanted to do neither according to Trotsky, who stated “neither was nor peace “meaning that the Russians would not fight the Germans but would not sign the treaty either. Consequences of signing the treaty had a dramatic affect on the Bolshevik party. It even caused more splits within the party itself.  Bukharin and the left wing wanted to prosecute a revolutionary war to encourage a European socialist revolution. The socialist revolutionaries even left the Sovnakom in protest. This is one of the problems faced by the Bolshevik government in October of 1917.

Another complication that the Bolshevik government had to face in October, 1917 was the issue of land distribution to the peasants. To solve this issue a decree on land was passed in October 1917 .Basically this meant that an authorized law was enforced by the Bolshevik party which gave peasants the right to take over the states of the well born and well bred without compensation. The Bolshevik’s thought it was the best way to divide the land up equally.
