Between 1914 and 1918 a war arose between Europe’s most powerful nations. The war had two sides, the Triple Alliance which included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy and on the other side were the Triple Entente primarily France, Britain and Russia. World War one was a war that was triggered by the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, who was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, but what if the assassination of the archduke was not successful, would there have been a world war one? Was the war inevitable? World War One is said to be one of the largest scale wars known to man, economically many countries battled for years and ended up in a war. The Great War is one which is believed to be inevitable, thus is further proven through various theories such as the arms race, imperialism, and national rivalries.

Military strength has traditionally determined a nation’s power during the decades of the twentieth century which was mirrored in the British navy and the German army. The British had the largest fleet of ships in the world and created a general rule that the British fleet would always be 10 percent larger than the two next strongest powers. The British military’s duty was to protect the British Isles as well as securing the trade routes within the empire. The German army was seen as a very efficient organization which defeated Austria-Hungary and France. Germany also increased strength through enormous industrialization. Kaiser Wilhelm knew that if Germany did not expand and create colonies they would never be the world’s strongest army which could only be achieved by creating his own fleet which in turn set the stage for the rivalry between Germany and Britain. Both countries created “dreadnoughts” and began the naval race, thus creating debt and increasing the inevitability of World War One. Due to the fact that now the two countries were in an arms race to become the most powerful nation they were creating chaos among their people causing an outbreak because everyone wanted to be the most powerful unaware it would lead to war.

Imperialism is a policy of extending control or authority over foreign entities as a means of acquisition and maintenance of empires (: 2006). The British insisted on showing the world the extent of their strength which they did during the crowning of King Edward VII in 1901 when representatives from all the British colonies attended. There were representatives from India, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the Caribbean as well as Canada. For the British imperialism was the creation of an empire for political and economic purposes. Imperialism was a benefit to European nations which increased importing and exporting as well ...
