Just Lather, That’s All
Hernando Tellez
- Retell the story from Captain Torres’ Point of view:
As I walked into the barbers for my weekly shave I noticed the barber sharpening his razors. As usual, I hung up my bullet studded belt, and said, “It’s hot as hell, give me a shave” Leaning back in the barbers chair I explained that the other men in my troop would have the same amount of beard as I had. I explained how we caught fourteen of them; soon they would all be dead. The barber knotted a sheet round my redden neck, as I continued talking, he seemed sympathetic to my situation I closed my eyes feeling fatigue. He began to apply the first layer of soap to my chin; I told him how easily I could fall asleep. The barber responded, “but there’s plenty to do this afternoon” and indeed there was. I heard him snap the razor open, a surprisingly comforting sound, and start to shave. I opened my eyes for just a moment, felt the nearly smooth area on my face and said to the barber looming above me, “Come to the school today at six o clock”, “The same thing as the other day?” I explained how this time it might very well be better. As I closed my eyes and leaned back the barber surprised me and asked, “Do you plan to punish them all?” I simply replied: “All”. It was hot in that little barbers room; and I often felt his skilled hands shaking above my face. I was calm; it didn’t bother me. I sat up running my hands across my newly smoothed skin, it felt fresh like new.” Thanks” I told him. I noticed how pale he was, and how his shirt seemed wet. I went to the hanger and grabbed my belt, pistol and cup. As I adjusted my buckle I considered what they had told me about the barber. Reaching in my pocket for coins to pay him I considered telling him what I knew. As I reached the doorway I turned round on im pulse and told him “They told me that you wanted to kill me. I came to find out. But killing isn’t easy. You can take my word for it. Before I could see his reaction; I walked down the street.
