Network performance for multimedia systems.

Network performance for multimedia systems.

Submit a report identifying the main factors that affect network performance for multimedia systems. Quantify each factor for typical present day systems. Describe, implement and demonstrate how each factor may be measured and controlled.

Introduction

There are a number of factors that affect the performance of a multimedia system. The accumulation of these factors will ultimately lead to a bottleneck. The decreasing performance of the network is most notable. Networking performance deterioration can often be caused by the end user or the networking equipment. In the following report we will determine the main areas of fault in a networking multimedia system.

What is a multimedia system

A multimedia system makes use of video, sound, text and graphics. Multimedia is widely streamed over the internet each day. Most of the multimedia we watch derives from the internet. As we are connected to millions of computers all over the world we are able to share video, music, pictures and many more aspects of this.

Media Streaming

The streaming of media has transformed the way we watch films and listen to music. The IP Multimedia Subsystem created by 3rd Generation Partnership Project  is used for streaming videos over mobile phones. Streaming media has become very popular since the development of the 3GP format. This file format is a simplified version of MPEG-4 Part 14 designed "to decrease storage and bandwidth requirements in order to accommodate mobile phones.”[1] Traditional methods of streaming videos would require the user to download the entire data.  Now, the technology allows us to watch media while downloading data from the server. This works by sending packets in sequence and displaying them to the end user. In recent times internet video sites such as "YouTube" has contributed to new network performance issues as they create havoc on IP networks. They will increase latency and add additional jitter and lower mean opinion score. When using voice over IP we use the term MOS to indicate the quality of the media when compressed or in transmission.

In the next section we will outline the main contributors to multimedia system performance.

Networking Devices

One of the main causes of poor networking performance is due to devices used. Using unreliable equipment will lead to poor service and slow data transfer rates.

Coding and Decoding

For media streaming we use a programme called a codec. This works like a hardware driver. Each type of media file will have its own assigned codec which deals with the coding and decoding of data. Data compression algorithms are implemented to all multimedia graphics, audio, and video. If you want ...
