Here's what a star student thought of this essay
Quality of writing
The level of language is excellent, very impressive. The essay is characterised by a smooth linguistic progression, which is aided by connecting words, such as: “heutzutageâ€Â, “nach + dativâ€Â, “auf der anderen Seiteâ€Â. Especially impressive for this level is the competent use of indirect speech, e.g.: “so sagen die entspannten Briten, denn unsere Muttersprache seiâ€Â. Firstly, this demonstrates a deep knowledge of grammatical rules and how to use them and secondly, it naturally introduces other opinions and speculation into the text (indirect speech makes statements suggestive, rather than assertive). There is a wide use of vocabulary appropriate to the topic, such as “Lingua franca†or “Verkehrsspracheâ€Â, and a generous dose of natural, idiomatic terms, such as “kein Wunderâ€Â. Only a few spelling mistakes emerge and they seem to be typos anyway. In terms of language, a very confident, fluent and elaborate text.
Level of analysis
Clearly, a lot of preparation and research went into writing this essay. First of all, there is a perfect balance of fact and opinion; the writer shows statistics taken from various studies, or topic-appropriate events, connects them to the point he/she is making and takes out thoughtful conclusions, e.g. “Nach HSBC behauptet fast 70% der britischen Firmen, der Fremdsprachen-Mangel sei ein Hauptproblem bei exportinduziertem Wachstum. This is a proof of competence and the argument's validity. Relevant and contemporary political issues and organisations are touched upon and turned into convincing arguments. We are also offered an analysis into the social attitudes and implications of English being a lingua franca from both the international and British perspective; “wenn fast die ganze Weltbevölkerung scheine, Englisch zu sprechen, wäre es den Briten dann eine Zeitverschwendung, umsonst eine Fremdsprache zu lernenâ€Â, „Die Wichtigkeit der Fremdsprachenkenntnis geht nicht nur um die Anstellungsmöglichkeiten sondern auch um internationale Beziehungenâ€Â. All this means that the essay is not merely a language essay anymore, but a thoughtful article; it demonstrates the writer's intellectual engagement with the topic. Perhaps most importantly, the writer delves deep into both sides of the argument, showing that he/she can think bilaterally even in a foreign language. In the end, the argument never loses its direction and flow.
Response to question
The standard of this essay is excellent, far higher than expected at this level, both in terms of the ideas expressed and the language applied. The text is divided into well-structured and fluent paragraphs; there is a clear progression of ideas between them. The first part explores the importance of English in various social dimensions (e.g. politics) while analysing the contexts and implications of this situation. Then the writer comprehensively portrays the other side of the coin by bringing up the importance of other languages vis-a-vis English. Moreover, in this essay structure we can clearly see that the author sides with the latter argument; and yet, all points of view are illustrated, making this a well-rounded social, political and linguistic argument.
