GCSE coursework 2 handling data

Estimating length

Introduction

In this coursework we will have a random sample of 50 estimates made by year 7 pupils and a random sample of 50 year 11 estimates. The estimates are of a piece of bamboo stick with actual length 1.58m. The data we have been given (the two lists of estimates) is secondary data - I did not collect the data myself. We were given a pre-recorded sheet of 173 year 7 estimates and 178 year 11 estimates from which I had to collect 50 random samples by using the random sample button on my calculator.

Hypothesis

My prediction is that the year 11 estimates will be slightly more accurate than year 7's as from my knowledge more educated guesses come with age. I think that the year 7 samples will be more spread out and have a larger range. I will use average, median, interquartile range etc to prove this. I expect that year 11's mean will be closer to 1.58 than year 7's for the same reasons I have stated above.

Method

To achieve my random sample of 50 form each list I used my calculators random number button. This gave every pupil an equal chance to be chosen.
