ARE WE LIVING IN A MORALLY IMPOVERISHED WORLD?
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” However, as rightly quoted by President Theodore Roosevelt: 'to educate a person in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society.’ In a world surrounded by multitudes of schools and learning centers, courses and libraries and on-line universities, let us pose for a moment and ask a question that has occupied thinkers, scholars, teachers, and peoples of many ways of life; “What is the purpose of Education?” Perhaps a conventional answer to this question would be that education serves the purpose of bringing about acquisition of knowledge and instilling in the children a desire to learn. But education should serve far more profound purposes than just these. In today’s society, a lot of school children go to school only for one purpose-to show of their parents’ wealth or perhaps to display the frustration in their lives by means of violence. The intense rivalry in this world has fast made its way into schools, which are considered temples of learning, especially in our country. One way in which this rivalry has come to the surface in the recent times is shootouts, in schools, in college campuses and other educational institutions. The truth that exists today is that as much as we try to protect ourselves and our loved ones, as much as we try to escape the harsh reality, and blame it on whatever demons we want to, we just can’t get away from this violent world, which we ourselves have created. Life just isn’t considered sacred anymore, indeed anyone can take it away in a flash of a moment.
