ARE WE LIVING IN A MORALLY IMPOVERISHED WORLD? "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." However, as rightly quoted by President Theodore Roosevelt: 'to educate a person in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society.' In a world surrounded by multitudes of schools and learning centers, courses and libraries and on-line universities, let us pose for a moment and ask a question that has occupied thinkers, scholars, teachers, and peoples of many ways of life; "What is the purpose of Education?" Perhaps a conventional answer to this question would be that education serves the purpose of bringing about acquisition of knowledge and instilling in the children a desire to learn. But education should serve far more profound purposes than just these. In today's society, a lot of school children go to school only for one purpose-to show of their parents' wealth or perhaps to display the frustration in their lives by means of violence. ...read more.

And countless more...It seems to happen with sickening regularity, every few years. Every time it does, though, we can only respond with a sharp intake of breath and a sad shake of the head. An incident that may spark off a fresh debate on the topic is the shootout which happened in a school in Gurgaon on the 11th Dec., 2007. It was most certainly the first of its kind in the capital region and it has indeed shocked one and all. Fourteen year old children planning cold blooded murders. What could be the reason for this? The major reason is definitely the violence and hatred that children are exposed to today. Conclusion

It is said that children are the future of our society, but are also the most vulnerable. Thus, we need to protect them from this materialistic world that is fast emerging, in order to ensure that the future is indeed bright. Even if parents can't spend enough time with their children, as child psychologist recently suggested, "Life skills" could be a course taught in schools today. We as a society need to address this problem and unite in this endeavor. We, as students are also responsible to check the situation immediately and spread awareness about school safety. True education is thus an instrument of transformation for the lives of the individuals as well as society. We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education. The complete education gives one not only power of concentration, but worthy objectives upon which to concentrate.
