We know Owen was very much against war and this is reflected throughout this poem, for example “Our brains ache as the merciless iced east winds knife us”. This is suggesting that the conditions in the trenches in World War II were not pleasant as the soldiers did not only die from the fighting but the conditions as well. That is what Owen disliked the most about the war, the great loss of life. In comparison to “Exposure”, “The British People go to War” is a complete contrast. In This piece of writing the general feeling and emotion towards the war is jolly and happy. It is described as something to be proud of as if it is a “new era”.
“War Photographer” like “Exposure” also portrays the idea that war is bad but the feeling is not as strong. The order of events in the story are that he develops his photographs and then they start to show up. He takes them to the editor and then returns to the war. I get the impression that he cares and then he doesn’t as if his opinions are always changing.
We know that Owen was in the War and we can presume that the author of “The British People go to War” was too, as he would have needed to gain the knowledge and experience of war first hand. In a way his views and opinions in the article could be classed as a form of propaganda. As I can not see the reason for him to say what he did about the war. The vast majority on people see war as a bad thing. If he was in the war I would hope that he wasn’t a soldier in the front line but a higher ranked officer so that he wouldn’t of experienced the war in a way that he sees it as a good thing.
We can also tell from the overall view of the writing as to how the opinions and feelings are. For example “Exposure” is against war so we would expect the pace to be slow .We can see this from the punctuation, This is obvious from the three dots at the end of the sentences, This would indicate a pause.
The pace of “War Photographer” again is different. Not only does it have no pauses but the passage is very descriptive which would emphasise an air of excitement.
As an overall comparison the only thing similar about these three articles is the fact they are all on World war II. I feel that they could be ranked in order of opinion on the war with bad at one end and good at the other. The two articles that would be most similar would be “Exposure” and “War Photographer” This is not because they are both poems but because “War Photographer is more against war than for.
