The idea and study of the passing if time and shortness of life is a common theme in poetry. Compare the different thoughts and emotions expressed by various poets on this subject.

Poetry is a way people can get their deepest feelings across, many of the poems that were studied all seem to be pessimistic about life, this is evident in certain phrases that the writers boldly pronounce. Throughout time literature has had a strong influence on the public. It has witnessed great writers such as Shakespeare, Keats, Herrick and many more. Many of the poems this essay looked at have been post 1400, the topic that was generalized was death, decay and life. From reading such poems it has given me an insight of different approaches that writers took to get there message through. The poems that were chosen to study are, ‘I Remember I Remember’ by Thomas hood, ‘When I have Fears’ by John Keats, ‘His Poetrie His Pillar and Daffadills’ by Robert Herrick and ‘Virtue’ by George Herbert.

Many of the poems are about life and dying. Two good examples of poems that portray that view are “Daffadils” by Robert Herrick and “Virtue” by George Herbert. Daffadils is a pessimistic poem which is written about how short life is. The name of the poem gives us a hint to what the poem is about as he uses it as a metaphor, ‘Daffodils are short lived, like life’. He expands on this view as you read on through the poem, by such quotations as, “like summer raine or as the pearles of morning dew. N’er to be found again”. What Herrick is writing about is that life passes by just as fast as morning dew and summer rain dries away. The writer uses a simile to stress his point which is very effective as it gets us inside the writer’s thoughts and makes us think that life does have a natural existence of being short. This view is also portrayed in a similar way in Virtue. The poem Virtue has a very complex meaning which is hard to get the grasp of. If you look deep into the poem, we can then find out that the title is tied in with the actual poem. It is almost like a clue that Herbert has left us. Virtue means simplicity or destiny, to do or commit something without anything getting in its way. All of the verses have four lines, during the course of each verse the writer starts and finishes a certain topic. The first three verses start with die, “all must…….. and thou must die”. This gives us an indication that everything has a simple plan, as in life, you live then eventually you must die. So what Herrick is saying, is that humans must have a simple existence and life is too short. We can link the two poems together by using the structure, in Daffadils. Herrick says life is short and Herbert says life has a simple plan. By looking at the verses in Virtue, each one is short, this could indicate life as being short, because we know that in each verse a new situation starts and ends, “Sweet day/……Sweet rose/……Sweet spring”.

Herrick and Herbert expressed there views very differently. This could be due to many reasons. In Daffadils Herrick leans towards the shortness of life by resembling it to something that symbolizes beauty such as daffodils. He does not say that life is bad he is saying that someday everything will die but life is good during the process, “Faire Daffodils”.  On the other hand Herbert tends to comprehend that life is simple, that there is no point to life as all you do is live then die. Although from reading the poem it is in part optimistic and pessimistic. I ...
