In the 19th century Vietnam was a French colony. An alien culture was imposed on the Vietnamese, because Vietnam was foreign ruled. In world war 2 Japanese invalided, with this the U.S.A began to supplies weapons to the Vietnamese and Ho Chi Minh, with this they fought Japan with Guerrilla tactics, and won. In 1945 The French returned to their Colony but Ho Chi Minch wanted independence for the Vietnamese. In 1954 the French left Vietnam. Because of what had happened in Vietnam, the Vietnamese resented all foreigners. In 1955 there was much cosine over Vietnam become Communist because Ho Chi Minch who had a lot of power over the Vietnamese was communist. So there was a conference in Geneva to decide how to stop communism in Vietnam. In the conference it was decided that the North of Vietnam would be communist lead by Ho Chi Minh, and the South was anit-communist lead by Ngo Dinh Diem but also backed by the U.S.A. In the Geneva conference it was also decided that their would be an Elections in Vietnam, so the people could decide what wanted to happened to Vietnam. But Diem cancelled the elections, because he was very unpopular with the Vietnamese and he believed he would lose the elections. Diem was corrupt. Buddhist Vietnamese would set themselves on fire as a protest against Diem. As a Result to this there was a Civil War in Vietnam North (Communist) vs. South (anti-Communist). The U.S.A backed the South of Vietnam because they believed in the ‘domino theory’ they believed if Vietnam fell communist then Laos would, and it would keep spreading until most of the world fell communist, (like dominoes, each pushing their neighbour over). Most Americans believed in this theory. They did not want this to happen. The Americans supported Diem’s anti-communist government. At this time the rest of the world was involved in the Cold War, which was trying to contain communism.
