Task: Was The German Defeat on The Western Front Caused by the Failure of the Schlieffen Plan?

One cause of the failure of Germanys on the Western Front in the First World War was the failure of the Schlieffen plan.   The Schlieffen plan aimed to take and capture France within six weeks of the start of the attack.   They wanted to attack through Belgium and Verdun and defend Alsace and Lorraine from the French counter attack.   However the plan ended up attacking in four groups south of the original planned attack and north of the planned attack on Verdun.   They wanted the plan over in six weeks as they felt that this was how long it would take Russian to arm and transport all there troops.   Due to the failure of the plan the Russians were equipped quick enough and attacking the east of Germany casing another front and forcing the Germans to defend their country on two fronts.   This dispersed there troops across two places and therefore no one place was stronger than the other causing a halt in the war. This then caused trench warfare which slowed the war down and then Germany started to loose troops and money.   This was a long term cause to the war as this happened for a very long period from almost the beginning to the end.

Another cause of the failure of the Germans on the Western Front was the Allied sea power.   The Germans had had armed ships and fleets in the seas of the world.   However the Royal Navy was very successful and by the end of 1914 all of the Germans ships had been removed from the world’s sea lanes.   The only sea vessels of the Germans that remained to be destroyed were the main fleet.  This fleet had not emerged from the ports accept for the indecisive battle of Jutland.  As this was the case the British sea power was demonstrated when the blocked the north German ports to starve the central powers of ammunition, supplies and food.   This was a long term cause of the failure of the Germans as this continued for long throughout the war.

Another cause for the failure of the Germans on the western front was another long term cause, as it happened way before the end of the war.   This cause was the failure of the Germans submarine campaign.   As the British had done to them they tried to starve the country of ammunition supplies and food to try and force them out of the war.   They went out saying that every ship delivering supplies or vital equipment to the British would be sunk.   This was the most deadly thing to hit the British ...
