Experiment investigating the effects of changing concentration of starch on the digestion of amylase
Aim
To find out the effects of changing the concentration of starch on the digestion of amylase
Introduction
In the digestive system starch is broken down into glucose and other simple sugars by biological enzymes. Enzymes such as amylase, protease and lipase act as catalyst to break up big molecules into small molecules so the can pass through the gut wall. Amylase is produced in three places – the stomach, pancreas and small intestine. In this experiment we will see how long it takes for amylase to convert starch into glucose. We will do this by using drops of iodine solution. If the starch solution stays black starch is still present, if it turns orange than starch is not present.
