The structure and function of the components of a typical human cell.

Cell Membrane

The cell membrane holds all the cell components and fluid inside the cell. The cell membrane controls what goes in and out of the cell. Proteins and Phospholipids make up most of the cell membrane. The phospholipids make the basic structure of the membrane and the proteins are found around the holes and help move molecules in and out of the cell.

Nucleus

The nucleus is a membrane bound organelle and is surrounded by a double membrane. It is often referred to as the brain of the cell. DNA is contained within the nucleus and is responsible for providing the cell with it unique characteristics. DNA is similar in all cells but depending on the cell type some genes may not be active. The nucleus also stores genes and organizes genes into chromosomes to allow cell division. The most important structure in the nucleus is the nucleolus.
