For this main coursework unit, the theme was 'Identity', from this theme I completed a number of different steps in helping me to complete my final piece. I have done a lot of preparation in my sketchbook so I'm ready for my final piece. For my final piece I drew a collection of digital drawing about creatures from the description of an Ancient Chinese book called "The Classic of Mountains and Seas”, I did this for many reasons, first I was already interested in this book for a long time, so when I knew the theme I thought that I could link this to my art project. This book was created by the Ancient Chinese, and at the start there are only drawings that they drew from what they could see, then the descriptions were made about the drawings. However, as time passed, the drawings have been lost or it’s colorless so we can only guess what the descriptions are telling us. The description from the people that time is very interesting since they would describe a parrot as a green bird with human tongue -  you can see they see things from a very different angle, the angle that can see different identities of the animals.

Once I had this idea, I made a mood board of the creatures of that book. Then I did research on the creatures and I picked out the ones that I like and see what identity features the creature has; for example, Bo – it’s a horse with tiger legs and paws. Then I drew observation drawing of the identity some from photo that I took and some photo from the internet. I did pages on the dogs, cats, fish scales, patterns of tiger’s and leopards, horse, different type of horns. For the observational drawing I tried out lots ...
