We designed our play so we could have different types of lies and effects. The first will affect the future of the family and the mother’s trust of the father, one will just affect the two sisters and finally the last lie will change the family’s relationship for ever. The first lie is about the father losing his job and because he to proud to admit it to the rest of the family. The second is about one the daughter’s ex-boyfriend dating the other one and is keeping it a secret.
The part I played in the group was the father who lost his job and is too proud to admit it. This was quite an easy part to play because no one had found out about my secret unlike the two sisters although I did need to watch what I said so I didn’t give them the idea that I lost my job but I also had to give the impression that I had been laid off. This was because I had to keep the audience thinking whether I had or not.
The fist scene is inside the house and is set at breakfast time. It is when we meet all of the characters for the fist time and we also get to see the begging of the lies and the setting for more. The scene opens with the father and mother sitting at the breakfast table then the first daughter comes in and sits down. This is when we decided to start off the dialogue. After a short talk the second daughter comes in with her mobile telephone and proceeds to send a message to her friend while ignoring her parents. Soon after the father discovers that her daughter has spent a large amount of money using her mobile, which is being charged to the fathers bank account.
This was the first dilemma we put in, the father has to pay for his daughters phone bill when he has lost his job and so cutting off a steady income to support his family. To make the first hint to the audience that the father is no longer employed I confronted her and told her “that we couldn’t afford this now”. The Scene ends with the two daughters storm out after having an argument.
The Second scene starts when the second daughter is on the phone to the boyfriend and is whispering under her breath some plans to run away. The first daughter over hears this and confronts her as soon as she hangs up the phone. We thought that this would give a little more tension between the sisters as the truth is finally revealed. The scene ends with the mother breaking up the dispute. This is another point where the mother breaks up the disagreement.
The final scene features all of the truth of the father’s losing his job and a dramatic admission of the second daughter’s plan. It ends on a cliffhanger with the father admitting that he has lost his job. We thought that if we had a cliffhanger it would make the audience think about what has just happened.
We thought of having a flash back somewhere in the play but we didn’t know how and where to put it, so we came up with the idea of having one of our group members saying “I’m sorry sir but as you know this company has run into a lot of financial difficulties lately and we have to let some workers go and your going to be one of them”. When this was being said the father would appear to be daydreaming as if he was recalling it in his mind.
In conclusion I would like to say that I learnt a great deal of new acting skills which includes how to move and act of you are withholding a big secret that could affect you family.
