When Mrs Johnston goes back to work she tries to be cheerful and act like everything is normal but Mrs Lyons is agitated because she thinks mars Johnston will get to attached to her baby and wants the baby back I know this because she says “Leave him, just leave him you’re always fussing over him”
Mrs Lyons wants rid of her because she doesn’t want the baby to know about her being his real mother so she tries to make out that her work isn’t very good and get rid of her. Mrs Johnston denies this and knows that she been good I know this because she says “But I I’ve worked the way I’ve always worked”
You can tell that she was not expecting this and would have been surprised and she would of felt betrayed. Mrs Lyons is afraid of Mrs Johnston because she might take her baby away and when Mrs Johnston Says “You sold your baby”
This would make Mrs Johnston feel guilty. This is what Mrs Lyons would of wanted and she is reminding Mrs Johnston of what she did and feel bad and she would let Mrs Lyons keep the baby. Her words get the better of Mrs Johnston and she leaves and seven children had two more on the way but Mrs Lyons only thought she had lets her keep the baby.
When Mrs Lyons employed Mrs Johnston she had seven children and two on the way and Mrs Lyons couldn’t have children. She seems to get jealous of Mrs Johnston. Mrs Johnston says “Here s you can’t have kids and me, I can’t stop having them”
When Mrs Lyons replies to this she is distracted and sounds like she doesn’t want to talk about it to much.
When Mrs Johnson finds out she is pregnant with twins she isn’t very happy because of the welfare I know this because she says “The welfares already been onto me”
This shows that she does love her children and would do anything to keep them. Mrs Lyons has the idea of her giving one of Mrs Johnston’s twins to her and is running it through her head. I think Mrs Lyons finds it hard to speak to Mrs Johnston because she’s jealous of her having all the children and she can’t have any. When she found out she could have one of Mrs Johnston’s twins she would have been over joyed because she would finally be able to have a child of her own. I find her very conniving when she’s figuring out her plan to trick her husband that the babies hers. Her husband wouldn’t let Mrs Lyons adopts because he wanted a baby from his own blood I know this because Mrs Lyons Says “I wanted to adopt but Mr Lyons is well… He says he wants his own son not someone else’s. This must have been hard for Mrs Lyons because all she has ever wanted is a child and everyone around her is having them or has them and she is in able. With her husband being away a lot of the time she feels lonely and isolated in her house on her own this is I think one of the reasons she wants a child so she can be occupied and will have company.
When the brothers are seven they meet up no knowing about them being brothers. Eddie has been bought up in a rich household where he has properly been spoilt and has a lot of attention because he was an only child. Eddie was bought up to talk and act in a proper manner. Mickey on the other hand was bought up in a poor household and had been bought up to be rough and quite street wise He had seven other brothers and sisters so he would have had less attention paid to him and would have figured out to look after his self better then Eddie.
When they first meet Eddie is bright and fourth coming he doesn’t seem to be afraid to going up to a stranger this must of confused Mickey because he is used to people coming up to him to fight with him and steal something off him so he is a bit wary at first. When Mickey asks “Give us a sweet”
Eddie offers him one straight away Mickey seemed taken aback by this because he’s not used to that sort of behaviour he would of normally had to fight for a sweet. Mickey takes advantage of Eddie because he keeps asking for a sweet knowing that Eddie will give him one because he thinks he's “Soft” was he means by soft is posh and doesn’t know how to look after him self. The conflict starts to happen when Eddie meets Linda. This is where the love triangle starts. Mickey and Linda pick on Eddie at first because of he wealth and the way he has been brought. Mickey and Linda peer pressure him into throwing a rock through a window “You’ve got to throw in through the window right after three…two…one” this isn’t fair because Eddie doesn’t realize that he is doing wrong.
As they all get older and grow up together Mickey and eddies class and wealth difference begin to show Eddie is going off to university and Mickey is struggling with a low pay job. And both are fighting over Linda.Love is one of the other big things that brings them apart. But because Eddie has left to go to university Mickey has an advantage and when Eddie came back they are married. This must have been painful for him because he has always had a secret love for Linda but never dared to say. I know this because he says “I might as well tell you; you must of known anyway. I’ve always loved you. I’m sorry” When he says this Linda would feel very guilty because she is married to Mickey and hasn’t told him. When Eddie gets told this he must have been very depressed it would of took a lot of courage to say that to her and he gets a reply like that.Mickey gets jealous of Eddie because of his wealth Mickey works on low pay in the place Eddie owns. The feeling that he can’t get a job on his own and can’t provide for his wife or baby must be horrible. When Linda starts going off to drinks with Eddie he must have been getting his hopes up because most his life he wanted to go out with her and always has to compete with Mickey, well now he has control over it. One reason I think he took her out for a drink was that he is used to being in control over a lot of thing and that was one thing that he wasn’t in control with.
At the end of the play when Mickey goes round to eddies house with a gun because he’s tired of all the control Eddie has over everything he just breaks down and tells him everything. This would have been building up inside of Eddie for along time not wanting to tell anyone so when it does come out it comes out very emotionally. Being held at gun point would have been scary for Eddie and you can tell by the things he say that he is very panicky like when he admits to taking Linda out “I just took her put occasionally”
This would have been heartbreaking for Mickey because Eddie had control over a lot of things in Mickey’s life but not his wife he thought he had her to his self. This would of made mickey more angry with eddie.
When Mickey says “I’ve got the power now” because he talking about the gun. He does this because he wants to be in control over eddie for once. When Mrs Lyons comes to shoot Mickey the twins bond together becoming brothers not enemies when eddie jumps in front of mickey to save him.
I think the most successful issue of the play was the relationship between Linda, Mickey and Eddie because it showed you the problems young people have today and how much the difference in class can change people towards each other. When Mickey and Eddie were younger they got along better and didn’t have to compete on thing because they didn’t know the difference of class they were in and didn’t understand it but as they grew up there relationship was just about competing and different things. They play has taught me that difference in class can make a big difference in your personality and that you shouldn’t take things like family’s or friends for granted.
