Different types of love in

Romeo and Juliet.

Love is an important theme in the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. The love between Romeo and Juliet dominates the play. The nature of their love is contrasted with different characters ideas of love in this essay I will examine how different the characters interpret the meaning and importance of love and the different types of love that are in the play.

Interestingly in a play about love, Shakespeare has chosen to open with a violent fight seen between the Montague and Capulet boys in Verona. Immediately the audience knows that this is a play about contrasts. Love is the opposite of hate. We are also introduced to a variety of forms of love. We witness parental love when lady Montague says “o where is Romeo? Saw you him today? Right glad I am he was not at this fray.” Lady Montague says this after the fight that takes place in the streets at the beginning of the play, this is the first thing she says to Benvolio. She shows concern for Romeo straight away. We also see Tybalts love of fighting when he arrives at the fight at the beginning and says “what drawn and talk of peace? I hate the word as I hate hell, all Montague’s, and thee. Have at thee coward.” We also see brotherly love when benvolio is talking to Romeo about rosaline. Benvolio shows a lot of concern for Romeo and is very sympathetic to him when talking about rosaline. We are also shown Romeos love for rosaline, when talking about her Romeo uses a lot of exaggerated language. What Romeo says does not make much sense, he does not know what he is talking about when he says it.

Romeo also says ‘did my heart love till now?’ which shows he has already completely forgotten all about rosaline and that he really does find Juliet attractive and seriously love her.  In act two scene two Romeo and Juliet use a lot of religious imagery in the way they speak such as when Romeo says “O speak again, ...
