Born in 1856 into a wealthy Philadelphia family, Fredrick W. Taylor

Born in 1856 into a wealthy Philadelphia family, Taylor disappointed his parents by working in a metal products factory, first as a machinist and next as a foreman. Shocked at the factory's inefficiency, and the practice of its skilled workers of purposely working slowly. As an engineer he was more interested in the practical outcome and not the psychology Taylor proposed solutions that he believed would solve both problems. By studying the time it took each worker to complete a step, and by rearranging equipment, Taylor believed he could discover what an average worker could produce in optimum conditions. The promise of higher wages, he figured, would create added incentive for workers to exceed this "average" level. Taylor's time-and-motion studies offered a path away from the industrial wars of a century ago. Now what was needed was a way to apportion the wealth created by manufacturing enterprises. Taylor's answer sidestepped the class struggle and interest group politics. He believed his principles would create a partnership between manager and worker, based on an understanding of how jobs should be done and how workers are motivated. These workers are motivated by money. He believed a fairs day work deserved a fair day bonus. He thought keeping his workforce happy would keep them producing at a high quality. He died in 1915, whilst on a speaking tour in the mid west

There are many important Themes in the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry. These themes include: racial prejudice, loyalty, honesty, friendship, personal integrity and respect for others. We first meet TJ Avery when Cassie, Stacey, Little Man and Christopher-John are walking to school. Right from the very start we find out that none of them actually likes TJ, except for Stacey. The reader sees that he is a liar, a cheat and a coward. He is ashamed of being black and he lets the Logan family down in many ways throughout the novel. One of the ways that he lets them down is when he gets Miz Logan fired. He went up to the store and told Kaleb Wallace that Miz Logan failed him on purpose and that she was destroying school property. wwbg bgw esbgbgs aybg bgba nbg kcbg bguk. One of TJ's biggest mistakes in the book is befriending two white boys, R.W. and Melvin Simms (Jeremy's brothers). He thinks they are his friends and he doesn't know that they are just using him. By hanging around with these two he ends up getting himself in a lot of trouble.

How does the author create a sense of fear and threat at the end of chapter 3?

How does the author create a sense of fear and threat at the end of chapter 3? When Cassie awakes she thinks that Bigma is by the window on the chair. Cassie's imagination is running slightly wild because she is imagining this. She wants to feel safe and protected by her family thinking that someone is close to her. 'Quiet now except for the drip drap of water falling from the roof'. There is no noise now apart from what the author is telling you about the effect of the drip-drap water which is telling you the sound it is making and how obvious it is that something may be about to happen. Cassie is afraid because she doesn't want to move from the chair. After a noise is heard on the porch Cassie hurries out there thinking that it is her brothers messing around. When the author tells you that, you are not quite sure what to think because if you were in Cassie's shoes, in her situation it could be anyone out there. Her brothers wouldn't be out of their beds outside in the dark at night time. 'Stacey', I whispered. 'Christopher-John?'. Cassie is not talking when she says this but is whispering because she is very cautious of who is there and who is making the noise. When a sudden movement is seen near the end of the porch Cassie heads toward it. This shows she is very brave and not scared to walk up there to see who it is. Fear is building up here because the author is keeping

Character Sketch - TJ, from the Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry

TJ's character sketch TJ, an obnoxious character from Mildred D. Taylor's novel 'Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry' comes across as an abhorrent cheater and liar. He is ostentatious, constantly vying for attention, and assumes white companionship will get him respect and admiration. TJ is a glib, loquacious person, who makes new friends readily. However, he uses this commendable skill of glib with malignant intentions, like making Stacey give him his brand new coat, saying that he would take it off his hands because it made Stacey look like a preacher. TJ, who enjoys complete trust and loyalty from Stacey, isn't really a true friend, but an apostate who doesn't deserve that kind of friendship. He only pretends to be a friend of the Logans so that he can get access to their mother's test questions. He always takes advantage of Stacey's unswerving trust and loyalty, betraying the Logans at many times throughout the story, like when he lets Stacey get caught and whipped because of his cheat notes, and when he betrays their mama to Mr. Granger just because she failed him for cheating in the examination. He, as a true hypocrite, keeps using friendship as his excuse, saying, "Friends gotta trust each other, Stacey, 'cause ain't nothin' like a true friend.", when he knows nothing of what a true friend is. True to his malevolent nature, he uses his brother as a scapegoat, making Claude

Comparing "A Sound Of Thunder" and "The Monkeys Paw".

Comparing "A Sound Of Thunder" and "The Monkeys Paw" In this essay, I am comparing two stories, "A Sound Of Thunder" and "The Monkeys Paw". Ray Bradbury wrote "A Sound Of Thunder" in 1952 and "The Monkeys Paw" was written in the late 19th century by WW. Jacobs. "A Sound Of Thunder" is set in 2055 and is in the science fiction genre. You can tell this because it is not fictional and is set in the future. It makes us think about future possibilities and even though it is not true at the time it is written, there is a possibility that it could happen in the future. You can tell that "The Monkeys Paw" is set in the future genre because it is made to give you a slight chill down your spine, and is about possibilities of things going wrong. It is set in an isolated position and the weather is bad, giving a tense and isolated feeling. The first contrast which can be seen is at the beginning of each story. The beginning of "The Monkeys Paw" uses very descriptive language such as Without, the night was cold and wet, the blinds were drawn and the fire burned brightly This is the opening line to A Monkeys Paw whereas the opening paragraph in "A Sound Of Thunder" uses no description, and talks about the sign on the wall, Time Safari Inc Safaris to any year in the past You name the animal, we take you there You shoot it This is a large contrast between the two stories as one is

How important is the setting and historical background of the novel "roll of thunder, Hear my Cry?

The America that "Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry" is set in, is so hugely different from the one that we have today. 1930's America was a place of turbulence. The consumer market had been saturated with goods. For a while this was a good thing, people bought them and the economy did well. However, after a while, so many people had bought the goods that there was no market for them now. Mississippi was hit hard by the depression. Before the farmer had over produced cotton and the price had fallen. To sell more, they cut their prices. Within a few year, cotton prices had fallen from two dollars a bushel to just twenty-five cents a bushel. While everyone was suffering, blacks, like the Logan family were suffering even more. The majority of blacks were share croppers and had participated boom in the first place, due to the way that they were treated by those whose land they worked on. Racism was always stronger in the Southern States than the Northern ones. Even though it had been around seventy years since the Emancipation Proclamation had been declared, many whites did not see blacks as equal to them, even though they had never been slave owners themselves. In the novel, the books that the children receive from the county are in very poor condition. They have only been given to the black children once that are in too bad a condition to be given the white children. This would

Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry

Does Mildred Taylor present a simple picture of a community in which all the black characters are good and all the white characters are bad? I don't think Mildred Taylor presents a simple picture of a community where all the black characters are good and the white characters are bad because as you read through the book the understanding becomes clear that not all the black people are good and not all the white people are bad. A good example of a black character that is bad is T.J Avery. T.J is a 14 year old boy who is obnoxious and cocky "Jauntily swinging into step". He does not have a high sense of integrity and sees nothing wrong with what he does with talking the younger children into things their parents have forbidden. He likes to act big and feel important for example, when he visits the Logan children and makes a major project out of telling the children about the news with the white men. He thinks cheating on tests is fine and later he lies to Stacey to get Stacey's new coat from him, but at the end of the story the older Simms brothers use him how he used his friends. A good example of a black character that is good would be Mr. Morrison, He comes to the Logan's because he lost his job and papa wanted a strong man to protect his family while he was working on the tracks. Early on in the story he broke up a fight with T.J and Stacey and does not discipline Stacey's

How does the writer use characters and events to show prejudice in Mississippi at the time?

bClaire McDonough 10W How does the writer use characters and events to show prejudice in Mississippi at the time? "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" is a gripping novel based on a family who live in Mississippi in the 1930's. Throughout the novel Racism and injustices are a regular occurrence. The story is told, through the eyes of a 9-year-old girl called Cassie Logan. Cassie and her three brothers, Stacey, Christopher John, and little man, are constant victims of racial views. They recognise most injustices and occasionally they plot ways of getting revenge. The worst effect of racism in my opinion was how the black children need to act around the white children because of the colour of their skin. Another serious flaw in the community was the difference between the standard of education between Blacks and Whites. I will attempt to explain each of these and more in order of importance. I will approach this essay by saying that the worst effect of racism is the legal system in those days, and its bias views towards White folk. Those of us, who desire to become teachers, imagine that when they do reach their goal they will have the freedom to teach what they feel appropriate and necessary. However, in the early thirties, in the south, the teachers were told to teach out of a book, which was written by white people. This is not the only defect in the education and how it was

Educational Memories

Educational Memories I first came into Wakefield City High School on September 1994. I had to go to the hall for an assembly. I was nervous I didn't know anyone. There was no one else from my old school just me. I was sat down feeling nervous in the assembly just then the head of lower school called out my name. They decided which tutor group I should go to Mrs Ellis's classroom. I made a few friends in my class Tariq, Ajmal, Safdar and Zulfiqar. At first we all used to have the same timetable and I would ask them which lessons we would have next and which room the lesson would be held. But then gradually we were put into different groups meaning different timetable. Most of the teachers didn't like us. In maths we would look in the back of textbooks for answers that would be in are maths work. In science we made a mess of all the experiments. I broke three beakers and two test tubes, once I squirted hydrochloric acid at the black board the mark is still there. My music teacher liked me because I was good at the essays and minor music tests. I scored a high mark in the music exam but I was awful at playing music. I blew up the keyboard adapter. We would throw water balloons at everyone in the winter and set of bangers at bonfire week. In food technology the teacher hated are cooking we never cleaned up after we had finished. In art we used to draw pictures on are art
