The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red, a non-profit organization which lists the global extinction risk status of animal, fungus and plant species, have listed more than 31,000 species are threatened with extinction. With 41% being amphibians, 25% mammals, 34% conifers, 14% birds, 30% sharks & rays, 33% reef corals and 27% crustaceans. What do you think causes these problems?
One of the substantial threats to wildlife is climate change and the destruction of habitat. Due to the major changes in the climate, many species are not able to adapt, making them extinct.
Over one-third of the reef building corals have faced extinction because of climate change and global warming. The Red List report also mentions that around 37% of Australia’s freshwater fish species are threatened with extinction because of climate change.
The loss of habitat also contributes in the decline of animal species because when a habitat is harmed it damages the plants, animals and other organisms; completely destroying our precious ecosystem and present great threat to biodiversity. It also contributes to the high level of animal extinction.
If we continue to take huge pieces of land from habitats where wildlife lives, there are higher chances of extinction to various species. I believe it’s time we get our priorities straight and even if it that means that we spend a lot of our economy on prohibiting global warming to protect wildlife and the environment so be it. This is a great cause which we need to press for. So, I urge you all to join and help the wildlife by volunteering your time to protect the wildlife in your area, educate other about endangered species and reducing your personal footprint and finally take action and convince civil servants about this important cause. I believe that us together, can save the rare species and help other animals. Thank you and I hope this message inspired you.
