How does Baz Luhrmann modernise Romeo and Juliet?

Baz Luhrmann a well known Australian director decided to modernise Romeo and Juliet.  He aimed Romeo and Juliet towards a modern young audience, so they could know Shakespeare’s play.  He knew that Romeo and Juliet had to appeal to young 20th century audience so he chose well known 20th century actors, Leonardo Dicaprio and Clare Danes.  Dicaprio and Luhrmann both met in Australia and started on the modernisation of the play.  Juliet had to be chosen by Dicaprio as she was the one who he had to love in the film.  The romantic scenes containing Romeo and Juliet had to look real so Dicaprio had to choose an actress who he liked and though he could work the best with to bring passion, love and affection between Romeo and Juliet.  Luhrmann chose Mexico as the location of the film.  He chose this to bring real anger to all the actors as this place was hot.  It made their anger rise so the film had reality in it.  Overall Luhrmann did everything that he could do to bring realism to the film and planned every aspect of the film very well.

The music before and during the love scenes is similar to the music in Zefferrelli’s version.

The wealth of the two families can be seen in many shots.  The wealth is shown from the starting of the film with a camera shot showing the sports cars and the ...
