How I Would Direct Romeo And Juliet.
Thomas Lohan 11 More Mr. French English Coursework How I Would Direct Romeo And Juliet. I have designed a “Stage Plan,” to accompany this essay. “Romeo and Juliet” starts off with a very active first act, this act is the fight scene and the stage is full of people fighting and running around. The next bit is the party again this has a lot of people on stage; these people are now dancing now and not fighting. Act two is a major difference because there is only Romeo and Juliet on stage. The stage will have no people on it when Romeo enters. I have chosen to keep the balcony because I believe it is one of the few things that makes “Romeo And Juliet” a unique play. Also in my opinion it would not be “Romeo And Juliet” without the balcony scene. The balcony will have a space underneath so Romeo can hide there. The costumes will be period, I have chosen to keep them period because I believe it is better than using modern day clothes. Romeo will be dressed in his party clothes whereas Juliet will be in he night gown, this will be white to show purity and cleanliness. The actors I am going to choose will be twenty to twenty three; I have chosen to change the age of Juliet because people in today’s society may find it unethical for a fourteen year old girl to be marring a twenty year old man. My scene starts off with Romeo

running on from the left of the stage and hiding under Juliet’s balcony, a few seconds after he has hidden some Capulets will charge on from the left as well, they will run across the stage and off the right, they are looking for Romeo. After they have left he will leave his hiding place and begin to pace back and forward, he will act very agitated and worried. After he has done this a light will go on in Juliet’s room. He will begin to say line 1 – 25 while pressed up against the balcony looking up. When the light has gone on Juliet will come onto the stage from the back of her balcony, she will stroll forward and lean over the edge, but she does not see Romeo, she will now begin to brush her hair and say her line “ Aye me,” now Romeo will sit under the balcony and say line 26 – 32. Now Juliet will lean out of the balcony again and say line 33 – 36 in a wanting way. Now Romeo will look up when he hears his name and begin to cautiously step out from his hiding place, he will then stop when he can see her and say his line. Juliet is now stood back on the balcony brushing her hair again, she says her lines in a way that sounds sensible and not from the heart. When she has said this Romeo will jump out off his hiding place and say his line in a very excited and frantic way. After this Juliet will begin to run back to her room, but she turns around and says her line in a very sheepish and nervous way. This dialogue continues as they look into each other’s eyes until she says “Art thou not Romeo, and a Montague,” with this Romeo looks at the floor as if he is upset, he stays in this position for a few moments and then looks up to her again, and says his line with a very soft voice. Juliet says her next bit with a tilted head and flirting with Romeo, as her lines comes to a finish she leans on the edge of the balcony and look at him directly in his eyes. Now Romeo being a man acts like the Capulet's don’t scare him, when in reality if they came along he would run and mile. He says his line “Alack, there lies more peril in thine eye, than twenty of their swords! Look thou but a sweet, and I am proof against their enmity,” Romeo will say this in a bold and cocky way. This line is important because it show to Juliet that he doesn’t care about her family, only her. They say their next few lines staring in to each other’s eyes. Juliet will sound like she is being swept away by Romeo’s words and Romeo will say his lines as if he is sweet talking her, which he is. When they come to Juliet’s long speech, Juliet moves away from the edge of the balcony and says up to lines up to line 89. These lines basically say, it’s good it is dark otherwise you would see me blushing. This tells Romeo and the audience that Juliet is also attracted to Romeo. The next thing she will say is very bold and forthcoming, she will walk back to her old position on the balcony, take a serious face and say “Dust thou love me?” From now on the lighting crew will begin to gradually bring the lights up to show that sun rise is coming. From this speech it is clear that Juliet is a person who thinks things through carefully and foes not listen to only her heart. Juliet goes on to say that she wants to slow things down until the next day, I think this is because she fears that Romeo is only after her because he wants sex. With Juliet saying this Romeo is not pleased, from how he reacted it seems like he is only in it for sex, but nearer the end it is made clear that he is not. So Romeo goes on to say “O, wilt thou leave me so unsatisfied?” Juliet then says what satisfaction do you want, I think she said this because she is testing him, if he says I want to make love to you, then she will know he is only in it for sex, but if he says something else then she would know he truly loves her. Juliet is now expecting him to say something about sex or kissing but he comes out with, “Th’ exchange of thy love’s faithful vow for mine.” This is a marriage proposal, Juliet is totally shocked at this, I would like the actress face expression to go from an open mouth (shock) to a grinning smile and she would jump up and down on the spot because she is so happy. This scene has show us a lot about Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is a hot headed young man who doesn’t think everything through, whereas Juliet is very level headed and only follow her heart to a certain extent. The rest of this scene is Romeo and Juliet planning out their wedding and how they will contact each other. I would have the actors playing Romeo and Juliet to act very excited and happy. Towards the end of the scene Juliet make three ‘delayed exits’. I believe that this is because she can’t wait to see Romeo again so she runs back to see him. When they have finished the organisation they will say goodbye, before Juliet leaves for good, Romeo points out to her that it is light out (the lighting crew should have brought up the lights enough for it to be easily noticeable). Overall this scene is an intense romantic scene, it is also the most memorable from the whole play. I think its memorable because of how different it is from the rest of the play, in the beginning there was always people on stage, the fight scene and the party, the stage would be full of people doing their own things making a lot of noise. Then all of a sudden there is two people and no action and hardly any noise. This is a major contrast from the rest of the play. The other thing that is odd is that this is the happiest scene in the film. Before this there was the fight, which is not very happy, then the party and Romeo was worrying about being caught, not very happy again. Then after act two scene two Tybalt kills Mercutio, then Romeo kill Tybalt and to top all that off both Romeo and Juliet die. In my view this is one of the saddest plays ever made.
