I was walking near some old cliffs one lazy afternoon when I stumbled upon a gruesome sight. The naked, mutilated body of a woman was lying propped up against an old, hollow tree.

There was blood everywhere, slightly congealed, lying in pools all around the body. It looked as though the fatal wound had been a stab, as her abdomen was ripped open and oozing dark brown blood quite freely. However, she had been mutilated in many other ways, too. Her face was the worst- her cheeks were ripped right across, the pinky flesh looked sickeningly comical. Quite a few teeth had been pulled out, broken stumps bleeding and bleeding. A small hole had been made in her skull, by a long metal wire, twisted and shoved until it had penetrated the skin and arteries. It was still in there, sticking out amongst the curdled blood. Her hair was matted, chunks of it ripped out and strewn on the ground.   The eyes were still intact, which was most ghastly of all. They were open wide, staring straight ahead. Did I recognise her at that point? No-I did not.  On her neck, beside her collapsed windpipe with the cartilage slipped out of place, there were words written- in black marker pen. I bent closer, and I could make them out- ‘You knew I’d get you in the end’

I shrugged. Nothing to do with me, I decided. Just another woman murdered in this world that was so full of murderers. I turned away, descended the slope from the cliffs down the village. “Should I contact the police?” I remember thinking. In the end I decided against the idea, they would cordon off the whole area, there would be interviews, suspects, witnesses. No, I would leave it, I decided. I hated the whole legal law enforcement panorama. And what is some dead woman to me? I never even knew her. So I didn’t contact the police. I was slowly ...
