King lear

The Protagonist of King Lear spends much of the play ‘ not in (his) perfected mind.’ How does Shakespeare present madness in the play and how does the theme contribute to the dramatic Impact?

“ Tis the times plague when madmen lead the blind.”

Madness can be associated with different meanings; in king Lear there are different levels of madness, which challenge the stereotypical view. For example, Shakespeare uses Lear, the central protagonist of the play; to portray insane madness to the audience, where as Mad tom is portrayed as fake madness. If you go beyond the mental madness, and associate the word madness, it could lead to chaos and corruption, which could be on a personal level or as a social. Madness is the main theme of the play and Shakespeare also uses motifs to help develop and inform the major theme of madness. Dramatic impacts are the things that evoke reactions from audience. Most of these dramatic scenes are related to the theme of madness; from the opening scene where the kingdom is split up to going out into the storm. Shakespeare has used two main plots to effect so that one mirrors another. In one plot its Lear and his daughters, and the other is about Gloucester and his sons. That is the main structure, which Shakespeare has used to write this play.

The madness shown in the play is based around the character King Lear, and Shakespeare uses this character and the interaction with other characters to drive the theme of madness. The first signs of madness from the character “King Lear” are in the opening scene where Lear divides up his kingdom between his three daughters, depending if they say they love him or not. Shakespeare uses Goneril and Regan to patronise Lear and get their share of the kingdom, however Cordelia is honest. “ I love your majesty according to my bond, no more nor less.” This is jukes opposite between the actions of the character Lear daughters, this shows that Cordelia respects her father but doesn’t want to feed his ego unlike her sisters. She feels it is a duty that she owes to Lear.  In this scene Cordelia disrupts the state of affairs by not playing the game like her sisters but her honest is put forward instead. This puts doubts in the back of audience’s minds over the cleverness of Lear decisions to divide his kingdom, which starts the audience to suspect that Lear isn’t in the right frame of mind, which could be the start of his madness. Also this shows the stubbornness that Cordelia and her father have in common. The three daughters show two sides of Lear personality. Goneril and Regan show Lear’s evil side while Cordelia shows his kind and gentle side. This mirrors the sub-plot, as Edmund uses his father to boost his wealth and power. In the play the character Lear gets rid of Cordelia, disowns her not considering that she was his favourite daughter and they had a special bond. “But goes my heart with this.” This evokes a reaction from the audience because of Lear’s rash decision and blindness to what is really happening. Kent, Lear’s loyal servant can see the wider picture in this scene and tries to influence Lear decision and show him the errors of his ways but is banished from the kingdom, which is a pattern for later in the play when Cordelia is banished “ Here I disclaim all my paternal care.” It is clear to the audience that Kent and Cordelia are morally preferable to Goneril and Regan, but when a moral suggestion is thrown at Lear, he disowns them. It is rather that it consciously and conclusively goes beyond morality, shown by the decisions Lear has made in the opening scene. This is a place in the play where it moves through the individual to the social but also of the very form of the play. “Reverse thy doom.” Shakespeare uses other characters and the dialogue in the play to show their bemusement at the scene of events that have taken place and there are doubts in the audience’s minds about the character Lear’s sanity, just from the opening scene. “When Lear is mad. What would’st thou do, old man?”

Shakespeare uses the fool and his relationship with the character Lear to reveal Lear's state of mind. The fool is also used to distract Lear from the pain caused by his daughters; the fools comment offers the audience a different insight to Lear mind and on his madness “ Nuncle give an egg, and I’ll give thee two crowns.” The egg could represent Lear mind, the contents of the egg emptied could mean that Lear has lost his mind, and the two fragile crowns are that he has left represent a broken. Or the egg could ...
