                  ROMEO AND JULIET

Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare in 1595.It is one of his most famous plays. It is set in a city called Verona a story of two young people falling in love but the two families they come from hate each other to a huge extent. The couple are determined not to let the feud between the families come between them but they have to live with the consequences. It is a typical Shakespeare tragedy so it involves love and death. Unlike Shakespeare’s other plays this play has optimism and comedy too. The play is divided into five acts and each of the acts a few scenes in them.

So far in the play we have learnt that the two families (Montagues and Capulets) hate each other because there was a massive brawl between the two families in the first scene. Romeo is heart broken because the girl that he loves (Rosaline) does not love him back. We have learnt that Romeo (a Montague) and Mercutio are going to a fancy dress party hosted by the Capulet family. This is because Mercutio wanted him to go and look for some other women. The audience will be expecting the Act One Scene Five to have a massive brawl between the two families because they know that Romeo is going to a party where he will most likely be less than welcome.

In the beginning of Act One Scene Five the servants and Capulet create a massive sense of excitement. The servant says “where’s Potpan, that he helps not to take away? He shift a trencher? He scrape a trencher!” This shows a sense of excitement. It shows that he is panicking and he is repeating himself because of the excitement and the anticipation of the party. There are also exclamation marks showing us that he is shouting loudly. This will add to the sense of excitement. Shakespeare uses repetition and exclamation marks (shouting) to and to the sense of excitement. The servant will probably be moving around nervously on the stage. Shakespeare uses Capulet adds to the sense of a lot. The first words we here is say are “Welcome gentlemen!” Again Shakespeare uses the exclamation marks to show that he is shouting really loudly. Shakespeare also uses repetition again because Capulet says this twice. Capulet wants everyone to have a good time so he orders the women to dance and the men to not be shy to go and dance with them. “Ladies that have their toes Unplagued corns will have a bout with you.” Capulet is saying to the men that there are lots of women ready to dance with them. This shows the scene of again because he shouting and trying to get everyone else as excited as he is. “More light, you knaves; and turn the tables up, And quench the fire, the room is grown too hot.” Capulet is using a glad toned voice to order the servants. He is ordering them to put out the fire and to move the tables to make more room. This is also showing excitement and it shows that more people are dancing because he wants to make more space. For the audience this is a great build up because they know that Romeo will enter the scene soon.

Romeo’s first speech in this scene is describing Juliet. This speech creates a fantastic sense of romance. In this speech Shakespeare uses poetry to create a sense of romance. He uses rhyming couplets which are often used in love poems. “Like a rich jewel in an ethiope’s ear;” This shows that Romeo thinks that she’s so beautiful she stands out above everyone. He uses the word jewel because he believes that she precious. “Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear!” This also creates a sense of romance because he is saying that she is way too beautiful ...
