‘ and I wish you’d.’
‘Oh I forgot.
From the overlapping this shows the familiarity between the mother and the daughter and how they are used to be speaking with each other. From studying text B, the mother and daughter also come across as a close couple. Firstly we can see this through the sentence ‘No mother wants to know her 12 year old is having sex but I’m glad she told me.’ This shows how the mother wants to protect her daughter and how they come across as close as they can tell each other anything. The short sentences ‘It wasn’t a one night stand’ and ‘she’s a little comedian’ creates a friendly tone and the short sentences show it is nothing serious and how they have a close relationship.
Another main similarity, which occurs in both texts, is the informal language from the speakers; this again shows the close relationship between the mother and daughter in each text. From studying text A we can see expressions such as ‘it’s Ok’ and ‘yeah’, we can also see utterances such as ‘oh god’ which also shows the informality of the language from each speaker. This is also shown through text B where the mother is evidently shown using colloquial expressions such as ‘she’d been dating the guy’ and ‘get her on the pill’.
However from studying both texts it is evidently that the mothers and daughters relationship is a lot different. In text A, it is shown that the mother and daughter own the same authority over each other. However it is shown that the daughter tends to take the higher role in the conversation. The daughter is also showing how she can play a higher role in authority when she tells her mother to “stop bothering me”. However the mother does tend to change the topic in the conversation and controlling them, this shows how the mother can too take control the higher role. However in text B the mother plays the more higher authority role as she is shown numerous of times trying to discipline her daughter. This is shown through the quotes ‘ I took her to the doctors next day’,’ I reward her with good behaviour’, these quotes show how she tries to discipline her daughter through ‘I took her’ show how the mother is trying to compete over her daughter for the higher authority between the two in the relationship.
Also another difference, which is clearly evident, is from text A, the mother and daughter have a happy relationship and enjoy spending time with each other. It is shown through text A through the mother and daughter playing a game of scrabble as they are spending time with each other. However from reading text B the mother and daughter try to avoid spending time with each other. The mother is quoted saying “I don’t see the point in punishing her. If I ground her, I’m just punishing myself because I have to put up with her in the house”. This shows how the mother and daughter try to avoid the two spending time with each other and how the mother directs her daughter and encourages her to go out on the streets.
From reading the two texts it is clear that there are differences between them both but there are many similarities, which are shown in both texts through the way in which the relationship of the mother and daughter are shown.
