Why did the Provisional Government fail?

When Tsar Nicholas II abdicated the throne in March 1917 it appeared to Europe that Russia was finally heading on the right track. Russian people thought that it was Russia’s time of change – many people wanting reform and democracy. A Provisional Government set up by the old Duma, acting as a democracy took over and tried to create a western style society. However this democratic government led by Alexander Kerensky lasted for only seven months at the end of which the Bolsheviks led by Lenin and Trotsky seized power. It may seem strange that the Russian people turned against their government even though their wishes of democracy were answered. So why did the Provisional Government fail?

There are many reasons why the Provisional Government fell. If the provisional government took control of a Russia that was free from problems it would of been an easier job for Kerensky. This however was not the case. Russia suffered from many political and economical diseases that plagued the whole continent. On one front Russia was at war with Germany and continually lost major battles and on the other Russia was being poisoned by revolutionaries alike – food was short, living and working conditions were poor and generally the peasants were not happy. The main underlying causes for the downfall of the Provisional government were their mistakes combined with the Bolsheviks power and success.

One of Kerensky’s main mistakes was releasing all political opponents that the Tsar exiled, one of them being Lenin the former Bolshevik leader. During his time in exile Lenin plotted and schemed for the uprising of the working class and the downfall of the upper. Lenin and other political opponents of the Tsarist Russia did not care that Nicholas the II was gone, they wanted more reform and the Provisional Government weren’t going to stop them.
