Which way are you inclined practical criticism or contextual approaches?

 

If one is to study the discourse of a text, one might argue that it is vital to analyse it in such a way that it incorporated a contextual approach. Such as looking at the historical, social and cultural background of the text. Others, such as me, would argue that it is vital to look at the text in a practical way. For example I would say that literature is a work of art in itself and should be viewed firstly as an independent entity.

Practical criticism is an effective way of analysing a text, of that there can be no doubt. Any piece of literature must be viewed by itself to start with because if one is commenting on it then it is vital to first understand fully the meaning of the text, and be able to read between the lines to find any evidence of covert message hidden in the text. Then to analyse these things is a credible way of looking at a text.

Having a solely a contextual approach to a text is an absolute waste of time. If ...
