Should We Make Voting Compulsory?

This is a very intriguing question because it is so controversial. Vote turnout certainly has a huge effect on the way that the public’s opinion is put across. For example, in Poland, in 2005; only 40% of those of eligible voted. This meant Jaroslaw Kaczynski became Prime Minister. In 2007 he went to the polls and it showed that many people were not happy with the result. New Young Voters bought the voter turnout up to 54% and this showed that Kaczynski’s Government was heavily defeated.

In Australia, after a very low turnout; it became compulsory to vote. This is supported by 70% of the population. People who don’t have a good excuse not to vote like being disabled or being abroad will receive a small fine. Despite it being unconstitutional not to vote, the ballot is still completely secret so this means people can still leave the ballot blank and write nonsense on it. Luckily though this does not hurt voter turnout so that it is as bad as when not voting is legal.

Some people would say not voting is disrespectful. ...
