"Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water."
God then decided to separate further, and created land to separate the water from…
Other bits of water.
"Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear."
God then finished with the heavy construction and started creating living things. The story doesn't call them living things but plants are living things to our minds.
“The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds”
God then decided that the night was too dark, and a little scary, so he decided to create the stars and the sun as lights in the dark.
“Let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth."
Next he created living things that can move from one place to another at will. He liked the way this worked, so he gave them the ability to procreate. At this point God was building up to his crescendo; all the living things lived in the sea and in the sky, nothing on land.
“Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.”
Now the first land animals were created; wild animals and livestock to be used by his ultimate creations; humans. These were made in, “God’s own image”, and we are now present on this earth. He told the humans that they should rule over the earth and spread to subjugate all previously created animals.
“Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds”.
“Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth”.
He gave these animals and plants to humans and expected them to treat them fairly and kindly.
Finally, God’s creation was finished, and he surveyed his work and watched what he had brought into being. After six days of back-breaking labour, he then decided to have a day off. As he rested, he thought how unhappy his creation would be if they did not rest, so he blessed this day and made it holy, so his creations could rest on this day.
“God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.”
