Another reason why people believe in religions is the discipline that the belief provides to the people. Discipline first came out of religion (10 commandments), a clear argument that justifies religion in the twenty first century is the fact that if religion did not exist arguably laws and the foundations of society would crumble. If religion did not exist it would mean to an extent the discipline that holds back the population from committing acts of crime and atrocities would disappear, it would be like taking away a brick wall holding back the masses from commitment crime. It is the key that holds back the population from breaking laws, religion imposes social control the moral and ethical value that religion contributes to society holds back people from breaking disciplines. If religion were to be extinguished in the 21st century it would clearly mean that discipline within society would crumble with it.
The sense of community spirit, the bonding that religion provides within societies, it gives a sense of belonging to people and gives people a sense of direction and purpose for their existence. Without religion within the society it would mean that foundations that are created would not be supported, religions provide people to connect with each other and without the belief it would mean that a lot of people would lose out supporting interests. Religion is a major contributing factor that provides and creates long term friendships, it creates strong community spirits within areas. An example is within Northern India where by most of the population are linked and have a strong sense of belonging because of the religion they believe in, Sikhism. Religion provides a large amount of people with the belief that their existence can be justified because God created them, if this knowledge were to be removed a lot of people would not be able to justify why they exist. People believe in God in order to understand life long questions such as weather why they are here and where they go after death. All these different factors clearly show why people believe in religion and God, each ties in with each other to show that religion has a great influence on the lives of the human population and its existence is undeniably unjustifiable because of the importance it has on our society.
Although the basis of religion does have its advantages it also has its disadvantages within the 21st century that can clearly justify the fact that its use is no longer necessary for the existence of man. One of the foremost factors that can clearly vindicate the fact that religion can be excused from our society is the modern argument of science Vs religion. Although it can be said science is a baby compared with religion its existence has meant that the importance of religion within our society is continuously decreasing. Science has replaced religion as the basis for what people believe in, people look at science and are able to see facts where as religion only provides beliefs that exist only because of the thoughts and teachings of specific men and their followers. Science is a modern answer to life long questions such as how the earth began and how man evolved into human beings. Science has come about and has to some extent proven the facts and theories that religions are supported on to be false. A clear support for this is the theory of evolution, when Darwin first brought up his theory of man evolving from apes it was a turning point of the importance of religion. The theory changed the way that normal people believed in their religions because it marked a point where by showing that religion was only legends and science is fact.
A second factor that supports the statement that religion cannot be justified in the 21st century is the fact being that the process of man has led to a change within the societies of the world. No longer to people rely on religion to live like they did in the past century where by the Christian church was a dominant and powerful leader of the livelihood of ordinary citizens. Now people do not need to rely on God and his powers in order to live peaceful lives, people now rely on the government, the military and armies in order for protection instead of the church. The importance of religion has decreased, showing from the pie chart that shows that 14% of the world are non religious, if this chart was to be compared with figures from the last century it would show a considerably difference. Mainly because if it was compared the 19th or early 20th century there would be 0 to 1% of the world population to be non religious. For a large extent of the people that are religious do not regularly attend ceremonies or celebrate religious holidays, this shows that even the religious are not even devoted to their religion and its use within the society and community is consistently declining.
In my opinion it is clear to see that the basis of religion, its beliefs and teachings do help people and also yet the dogma that religions thrive on cannot be supported with facts. This shows that even though it can help people the help that religion provides to people is not to a large extent from the religion but from people actually devoted to something with a specific cause. People are religious for there own personal reasons, for their own motive and beliefs in their god. It must be taken into account that even though the pie chart shows 86% of the world population are religious it does not explain the fact that even though people are religious there are not strictly disciplined by the rules and laws of the religion. Religion has its justifications and arguments against the cause but if people believe in their religion and their own God then there belief cannot be under no circumstances, unless otherwise, be removed from them. People should be allowed to believe whatever they want to believe and if religion does provide people to live better and more honest lives then in my opinion everyone should be religious.
Overall the statement can be described to be false, even though it is the 21st century people should be allowed to believe in religion weather they want to or not. The century should not determine the belief that people rely and live their lives upon. Religion has its advantages and to some extent it helps the world to live in peace and harmony because of the moral and ethics they provide to people. People’s belief should not be questioned but the belief itself should be questioned to clearly argue weather religion should exist in the 21st century. Religion does not harm or hurt people so weather people believe it or not should not be argued if the belief in religion and god help people to live then the justification for it does not need to be concluded.
