Religious belief cannot be justified in the Twenty First Century

Religion has been apart of man since the dawn of civilisation; it has been one of the major contributing factors in events in our history. It has caused wars, conflicts and battles to litter our history, yet it still exists even after so much threat to its existence. People believe in God for many different reasons and all are justified for there cause. It may be questioned weather God exists and why we should believe in something we cannot see but it cannot be questioned the fact that by believing in God a large amount of people have benefited to live better and more honest lives.

In order to clearly justify and explain the statement the term religion must be described to conclude the argument thoroughly. Religion can be described as the belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe. It is a set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader. As James Martineau describes “Religion is the belief in an ever living God, that is, in a Divine Mind and Will ruling the Universe and holding moral relations with mankind”. He shows that religion is basically a cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion.

There are several advantages and clear justifications for the belief in religion and God. Factors that justify the belief in God includes the fact that a large extent of the population believe in God because a lot believe that consolation comes from the idea that an almighty being is aware and concerned for his variations. People believe that God will look over them and protect them from any dangers. Although this is just a reason why people believe in God it shows that people do believe in religion and God because they gain comfort and relief from it.

Another reason why people believe in religions is the discipline that the belief provides to the people. Discipline first came out of religion (10 commandments), a clear argument that justifies religion in the twenty first century is the fact that if religion did not exist arguably laws and the foundations of society would crumble.
