To a Christian the Bible is no ordinary book- it is sacred and holy. They believe that it is some way the word of God, which can teach them, guide them through hard times and inspire their lives.
“ All scripture is inspired by God, and is useful for teaching the truth, rebuking error, correcting faults, and giving instruction for right living” (2 Timothy 3:16)
Some Christians use the Bible as a form of meditation, they will read a passage several times to understand its true meaning, and maybe say a short prayer too. All Christians interpret the bible in different ways- some think it’s the direct word of God, others think it’s the word of God but written down in the personal styles of the writers, some think it has a much deeper meaning and aims to make people think for themselves and lift their understanding about their position on Earth.
People believe that its teachings are eternal, as human nature does not change and so the teachings written all those years ago are just as relevant today as they were back then.
- How is the Bible is used in corporate and private worship?
Christians use the Bible in many different ways. When in a congregation (corporate worship) lessons from the Bible are read out and the congregation will listen. Every Sunday the bible will be read throughout the World- as Sunday is the holy day and the Day of rest. So two reading, one from the Old and one from the New Testament will usually be read out, changing every Sunday so people whom go to Church will hear a variety of teachings. When used in corporate teaching the bible will be kept upon a lectern which is a stand, often shaped like an eagle and the leader of the Church will give a sermon, in which he quotes from the Bible but then explains its meaning to the congregation. Yet it’s not only the church where Christians can meet to study the Bible, many do so in their homes with friends, or in little meetings at local buildings. In these groups they will read passages from the Bible then think about what they mean. As Christians believe that the Bible can be applied to everyday life such as bullying, and racism. They also begin to understand their faith more deeply.
The Bible however is also used for personal study (private worship). Some Christians set aside a few minutes per day to pray privately and study certain aspects of the Bible. Many open the Bible at a random page, and the passage they read will guide them through their day. ‘The Daily Offices’ is the name given to collections of various prayers, psalms and readings. A certain passage may be read a few times, slowly so Christians can interpret its meaning, and think deeply about its words- they may then say a little prayer.
Christians who follow liturgical styles of worship (set-out activities) see worship as sacramental and receive deep religious and spiritual meanings out of worship. Those who follow non-liturgical styles tend to be part of more spoken presentations and responses. In worship the Bible enables them express their faith, strengthen their daily lives and can be expressed through everyday activities such as art, music and greeting others. The bible is used in ALL aspects of worship~ Personal prayer, Eucharist, festivals are just some examples.
