I think that the group wanted to portray sexual power though using the idea of ‘Adam and Eve’ to build on. The group obviously decided upon a clear narrative that follows a logical development and the scenes are flowing. Gender (masculinity and femininity) is developed through the presentation by using sexual empowerment (using the apple to signify this). They begin by having equal power, but when Holly takes a bite of the apple, she becomes sexually empowered in a stereotypically feminine way, slowly seducing Kieran. When Kieran takes a bite of the apple, he too becomes sexually powerful but in a stereotypically masculine way – slapping Holly on the backside.
The presentation was kept relatively naturalistic in the way that no action/event/gesture/prop was really denaturalised within the space; I suspect that this was probably done so that the audience’s attention did not detract from the main theme of gender.
To me, the presentation is all about the process of social classification and organisation though the use of gender roles. The piece seems to depict stereotyped gender roles in society (Holly seducing Kieran while Kieran just leers at Holly and slaps her backside). I feel that the last scene of the performance reinforces this point: stereotypically, woman are known to dismiss males using the phrase ‘Men’, while men are more inclined to say ‘Women’, or in this case, ‘Fucking women’. I feel that the group wanted to show the differences between men and women using societies understanding of gender.
I think that the presentation was a loose adaptation of the story of Adam and Eve and I think that the group used the apple as a representation of sexual power, drawing on the idea that in the story of Adam and Eve, the apple represented Eve’s temptation in the Garden of Eden.
