Would You Like To Buy A Laptop During Your Study?

Abstract:

Thirty students in the University of Hertfordshire were questioned in the research. The purpose of the survey is to discover whether the university students will buy a laptop and why they want to buy it during their university study. In addition, this report intends to find out the factors that affect on the students’ decision to buy a laptop.

Suggestion is given to those students who are planning to buy a laptop. When selecting a laptop, they should consider their financial situation, the usage and the quality of the computer, but never only focus on the brand, the configuration, and the appearance of a laptop.

Introduction:

As early as 1979, Briton, William Moggridge, designed the first laptop. After this, the technique of laptop computer developed very quickly, especially after the Windows system, Internet and Multimedia technique developed, more and more people found it become very important in their daily lives, work, study, entertainment, business etc. It makes the Earth seems smaller, making people more closed, making work easy, and life more wonderful.

Many laptop producers appear to be very successful, such as IBM, TOSHIBA, COMPAQ, SONY, and DELL. Each of them has their own advantage and disadvantage. These brands also have been the most favorite choice when people considering buying a laptop.
   More and more university students think a laptop is important for their studies, and many students do have a laptop now. It appears that laptop will be a necessity of the university students, just like a mobile phone is owned by almost every university student. The purpose of this survey is to discover how much laptops effect on the students of the University of Hertfordshire. Whether the students have had a laptop and whether they will buy a laptop. In addition, the report attempted to present some other findings. For example, how do they to choose their laptops and how to use them? Which is the most important reason for them to buy a new laptop? How much time do they spend using a laptop a day?

Methodology:


 
In November 2002, an instant survey was carried out among 30 students (14 are female and 16 are male) of the University of Hertfordshire. The survey was conducted by means of a questionnaire given to the students to complete.
 
There are fourteen questions in total. The first section (from 1 to 6) is about some background of Interviewees. For example, “how old are you?” “ Where are you from? ” .The second section (from 6 to 14) is about the views of buying laptop. For example, “What do you think of the main use of laptops to you?” “Which is the most important to you when you choose a laptop?
 The survey was carried out in the LRC, student accommodation and refectory. For the general information, we chose the sample with different sex, different nationality, different major, and different age intentionally.

 
The questionnaire was designed with multiple-choice to the students complete.
 
All members of the research group distributed and collected the completed questionnaires in October and November. The final data were counted on November 19.

Results and discussion:

1. Background information of Interviewees:

30 students of University of Hertfordshire were given the questionnaire with instructions that they should fill out the questionnaire individually. In what follows, the background information about the sample of 30 interviewees was presented.

Among the 30 students, 46.7% of the students are female and 53.3% are male (chart 1).
