Question: In both “The Lesson” and “To Sir With Love”, students are taken on a trip outside the school in which lessons are taught. Compare the outings.

        The two novels talk about teachers’ roles in educating their students. The approach and expectations differ but they share the same mission. That is to educate the students. In both of the novels, the teachers had brought the students for an outing. This outing is meant to educate the students in a way that, to get the students to experience the real world. The teachers used the same elements of connecting the students with the real world. The teachers let them to explore and to have a bigger picture other than their own world.

        In the novel “To Sir With Love”, Braithwaite is placed in a classroom full of rude, obnoxious children. In the beginning, he said that he wanted the job, "but it would be a job, not a labor of love." Then, after spending time with the students, Mr. Braithwaite began "learning from them as well as teaching them." One day, Mr. Braithwaite brings the students for a class outing to the museum. He brings them to the museum and for his surprise, the students like it very much. They behaved well and act like adults. They did not cause any trouble and they are full of concentration during their visit. The outing let the students to be outside from the classroom and learn about new things around them. The class trip deals with real life situation and expose them with the reality around them. Mr. Braithwaite joins them on a journey to adulthood.

The students ask many questions, which allow them to acquire the knowledge they deserve. On occasion, the question touch upon people of different races, and Mr. Braithwaite gives mature answers, and speaks to them as adults. Braithwaite's theory is to treat his students older than they are so they will behave more like grown up. Mr. Braithwaite put his trust on the students by not constraining their behaviour. He treated them like adults. With this trust, he gains respect from the students.  The students took the matter seriously, and even though Weston stated that, the outing is merely an opportunity ...
