Outline the reason why some argue that morality is linked to religion.

It has been argued by some scholars that morality has been liked to religion for some of the following reasons.

It has been said that religion and morality provide a social cohesion and that religion structures the various moral codes that society has and that without religion, there is no rationale or meaning to these codes. For example, religion tells us that to lie or cheat is immoral and wrong and therefore, if we were to lie or cheat, we feel that this is wrong and so we feel guilty and do not do it again.

It has also been argued that if we were to remove religion and God, this also means a removal of the shame and guilt and the removal of the shame and guilt breaks down powerful means of social control over peoples behaviour. If this does happen, what then becomes of the society? Is society breaking down too? In other words, religion is there to cement society and in doing this, it 'obliges' individuals to act in a socially acceptable manor. From this, it is also possible to argue that many of the laws in today's society have come from a religious foundation. In the 10 Commandments (Exodus 20), murder is outlawed, as is stealing and these are outlawed in today's society as well.

We can see from this that religion provides the basic 'frame-work' for living and if there is no religion, there is no society and therefore, anarchy will reign.

It says in the Bible, "God made man in His own image" (Genesis 1 v 27), and according to theologians, the goal of mankind is to grow into the likeness of God, but although man is born in the image of God, without the guidance of religion, he can degenerate into a base state or lower form. This is because man had fallen from Grace (Genesis 3 -The Fall and Original Sin (God gave Adam and Eve 'Free Will' and told them not to eat from the tree of knowledge. They disobeyed God and therefore had sinned against God. This sin was passed on through the ages. Christians call this the Doctrine of Original Sin and it refers to The Fall. From this, suffering has entered the world)), and needs the church and religion to redeem himself because without which, he will fall into wicked ways. (E.g. becomes selfish, lacking compassion for others and having no respect for other people's property.)

Religion inspires man to be good and show goodness in ways such as compassion and selflessness and this comes from "Love God and love your neighbour as you love yourself" (Luke 10 v 27 - The Parable of the Good Samaritan). Another way in which religion teaches us to show goodness is to not act out revenge on an enemy, "If someone slaps you on the right cheek, turn and let him slap the left cheek too" (Matthew 5 v 39), and "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" (Matthew 5 v 44). From this, you can become courageous and brave but if there is no religion, is there any need to become courageous or brave?

If there is no God or religion, why to we have consciences? Who is it, or what is it that tells us that we must rush into a burning building to safe a poor defenceless baby? People of a religious belief would tell us that your conscience is the voice of God in your head (making him omnipresent) and because "God made man in His own image" (Genesis 1 v 27); conscience was implanted by the Creator. Religious people tell us that because our conscience is telling what is wrong and right, there is a strong link between ...
