Operational Definitions: there are no explicit operational definitions here and so assumptions that it is the same as the "British Crime Survey" in "Crime Statistics in England and Wales".
This is not on the whole a satisfactory way to work and in order for the statistics to be more reliable, a cross check with "Crime Statistics, England and Wales" of the same years would be necessary.

Operational Definitions: The operational definitions are clearly stated in the introduction to this book. A criminal offence is any offence that has been recorded by any one of the 43 police forces in England and Wales and offenders dealt with by formal police cautions or by criminal court proceedings within these police areas.
Appendices about what offences have been included and what changes in the law there have been since 1975. Cautionary notes in the introduction about unreported crime, crime not been recorded by the police, the inclusion of minor offences and crime dealt with by special focus such as the Transport police not being included.
