Brassed Off

Brassed off is a simple plot that reveals a community of South Yorkshire citizens and their lifestyle during the pit closures of 1992. The main purpose of the film was to show the triumphs, traumas and tribulations of everyday life and opinions of a close-knit society that had been severely affected when the coalmines were condemned to closure.

The producer Steve Abbot and the director Mark Herman did this using many aspects involved in the film including the use of cinematography, by Andy Collins, music, by Trevor Jones and the skilled cast of actors and actresses.

Brassed off was filmed entirely in the vast open countryside situated in and around South Yorkshire including the tiny communities of Grimethorpe, Halifax, Doncaster and many of the surrounding villages of South Yorkshire.

Mark Herman had planned to write a script based on the impact of the closure of the mines ever since Steve Abbot and himself supported the 1984 miner’s strike. “I had lots of ideas about the issues I wanted to tackle”, Herman said “but no peg to hang it on.” Then Herman read a newspaper article about a northern pit village which had a brass band however their musical talent would have been lost because of the pit closures and the unemployment perspective. The way in which the closing of the mines impacted not only the people but also the music seemed an appealing way to persuade an audience against pit closures. “It’s not just a Yorkshire story, it’s very important that it is also a Universal story.”

The Cast of Brassed off includes:

Pete Postlethwaite as Danny,

Tara Fitzgerald as Gloria,

Ewan McGregor as Andy,

Steven Tompkinson as Phil

Jim Carter, Phillip Jackson, Peter Martin, Sue Johnston, Mary Healey and Lill Roughley.

Set in Grimethorpe in 1992 “Brassed Off” is a story based on a populace facing the destruction of it’s primary industry and it’s fight for survival of that very source of pain, the Government, whom which is making an entire community redundant. The trials and tribulations of the residents of Grimethorpe are all viewed through the village’s brass band in which many of the miners are involved.

The first shots of the film give a typical stereotype of miners, disheveled, idle, sour and crude men. However throughout the film the relationships, romance, hardship and events highlight and contradict that very stereotype to give a whole new image and opinion which is used to persuade an audience that the closure of the coal-mines was unnecessary.

When the pit is threatened with closure so is the bands membership. That is until Gloria appears on the scene. The young, svelte, immaculate blonde seems to silently persuade the aging musicians in the band to solemnly commit themselves. Many events and occurrences present themselves in this film and “Brassed Off” shows the struggle for survival in one single, simple community.

Many different ways are used in the film to assist in convincing the audience that the termination of the mines was and remains immoral. One method is the music in the film and how it is used.

The music that is used in every scene is relevant to the mood; emotions and feelings, there are many examples when this has occurred. One event in which this is appropriate is when Danny is in the hospital suffering from pneumacosis and outside the brass band play ‘Danny Boy’. This is suitable by name and also ...
