Coursework Essay – Film Language (Genre and Narrative)

The film I am going to write about is ‘twelve Monkeys’. It was directed by Terry Gilliam and the film was released in 1995. It stars Bruce Willis (James Cole) Madeleine Stowe (Dr Kathryn Railly) and Brad Pitt (Jeffrey Gomes).

The film is about, an unknown and lethal virus has wiped out five billion people in 1996. Only 1% of the population has survived by the year 2035, and is forced to live underground. A convict (James Cole) reluctantly volunteers to be sent back in time to 1996 to gather information about the origin of the epidemic (who he's told was spread by a mysterious "Army of the Twelve Monkeys") and locate the virus before it mutates so that scientists can study it. Unfortunately Cole is mistakenly sent to 1990, six years earlier than expected, and is arrested and locked up in a mental institution, where he meets Dr. Kathryn Railly, a psychiatrist

I would place this film in the science fiction genre. I would say this because the in the first fifteen minutes show obvious conventions that would put this film in this genre.

For example the mise en scene like the setting and the cloths they wear are futuristic.

The opening of the film starts with a dream. this has a man being shot and a little boy watching. The film lets the viewer know it a dream or not real because of the bight light used and the slow motion of the sequence. This does set the genre yet. This probably wants to create suspense. You find out that Cole is dreaming. this is where you meet Cole and there is equilibrium. You find out that Cole is a prisoner and understand what his life is about. He is then ‘volunteered’ to go out side and collect animals for the scientist. When he comes back he is set on his quest to go back in time. If he does this he will get his reward which is a pardon. So he moves into disequilibrium.

The first fifteen minutes of the film do show a certain narrative that you can apply some of Todorov theories to this. You first have equilibrium where you learn about Cole and then the is disequilibrium when the scientist send his on a mission (the quest) and he will and then end of the mission be promised a pardon and released  from prison (the reward of the princess). But this film does not follow all the theories of todorov. The film jumps back in time and does not follow a chronological order. Also Cole is seen as the ‘hero’ ...
