Does the opening scene of "Mission Impossible Two" clearly show what genre the film is in

This film contains a hard rock theme tune. This is inevitable in an action film. However there is also a different style of music in the opening scene. A Latin American tune is heard very quietly in the back ground. This is very unusual of an action film. However, the scene is set in Utah (South America) which could be the reason behind this. Also I think the audience would find this very interesting. The tune fits into the scene well. When the tension increases the music gets louder and louder. Also the theme tune is very upbeat and loud. The audience wouldn't find this surprising, most action films contains a rock theme tune. However the other song could suggest a different type of genre. Perhaps?

Mission Impossible two is mainly an action film. The camera and editing in the film should be varied to keep it interesting. Like most other films. This film is no exception. There is a slow motion shot when he jumps across the cliff face, which makes the audience focus on the danger of the stunt. This has an "on the edge" effect.

Also at the beginning of the scene the camera pans around to show the audience the different surroundings. However it is done very quickly and the audience may not catch everything. I certainly didn't. The majority of the scene contains straight cuts. This is used to simply get from one shot to another quickly and is used mostly in action films to match the style and tempo of the film. Straight cuts are to avoid the scene looking tedious and overdrawn. A film filled with fancy editing wouldn't look good at all and would look unrealistic.

The mise en scene in the opening scene consists of props, clothes and background for various different genres. The background is very baron and mountainous. This gives us absolutely no identification of what genre the film belongs to. However, Hunt's clothes, a black top, beige combat trousers and black shoes could give a slight indication of what genre it belongs to. The clothes are very scruffy and the "combat" trousers suggests action. Maybe? Also the props such as the helicopter or the rocket definitely suggest, war, explosions, violence and most importantly, action! The gadgets in the film also give strong evidence of an action film. The high-tech glasses with the saying, "This message will self destruct in five seconds" suggest secrecy and high importance, like the work of a spy. The audience will think this is original to have in an action film. Maybe they'll think it's a spoof of a James Bond film with tired and tested ideas. Whatever they think I'm sure they'll agree it's mainly an action film.

If we take Mission Impossible Two and compare it to one of the greatest action films of all time, The Matrix, you'll see they are very similar. The camera shots in Mission Impossible two contain slow motion shots and some panning. The Matrix also includes these as the main character Neo (played by Keanu Reeves) defies gravity just like Ethan Hunt with slo-mo shots and both include panning around vast landscapes. The music is very similar also, both contain a hard rock theme tune and similar sound effects like gunshots and helicopter movement. The mise en scene however is very different. The Matrix contains stylish, leather coats and awesome fire power. Whereas Mission Impossible two contains scruffy, torn clothes and only a single piece of high tech equipment. However I don't think this has anything between one film being better than the other, I think that it is due to the location. The Matrix is set in the urban jungle which therefore should contain stylish gadgets. However Mission Impossible is set in the baron desert which therefore should include a limited amount of weapons and scruffy clothes. These statements prove that the film can match up to one of the greatest films in action history and also proves that the film is in the action genre.

Overall, I believe that Mission Impossible two is a an action film. Even though there are hints of mystery, comedy and romance most films are a mixture of genres but are known to the audience as the most obvious one. I'm sure most people will agree. Most of the aspects covered in the film are that of an action film which is shown in the comparison to The Matrix. I believe that the opening scene isn't over the top (like some films) and has a good balance of action and storyline. All in all Mission impossible two has a great opening scene and I like it.
