Chicken Run

My essay is based on the film ‘Chicken Run’ and how the films makers use presentational devices to reveal good and evil in the characters of Ginger and Mrs Tweedie in the opening scenes. Film is a text that can be “read” like a book as the filmmakers use “film language” or presentational devises, I will explore how this is done. This has an impact on the audience and their understanding of the film when watching, as it influences and persuades their thinking. For example, the sound in a film being creepy and sinister, along with the lighting being dark will easily set the mood in a film to be scary and tense.

Chicken run is a film all about a group chickens trapped on a farm fearing their lives and are so are on a mission to escape. Despite their best attempts and effort at escaping numerous times, the evil farmers always recapture them. Nick Park, the director of Chicken Run in my opinion has created a comedy film, but if looked into deeper the story is all about the chickens struggle for freedom. The film Chicken Run is closely related to the action film The Great Escape (1963), as it also is about the struggle for freedom, but on this instance its people trying to escape from a German concentration camp, instead of chickens running as fugitives from a farm. To show how Nick Park has illustrated the different aspects of the film I will explore and examine the devices used in the film such as; the setting, sound effects, lighting, camera angles, character interaction, body language and props. All of these add to the tension, atmosphere, mood and impressions.

Filmmakers create the mood and atmosphere through a variety of camera shots, by which they convey the films meaning. Close up camera shots are used to show great detail in a certain part of a scene, such as focusing on a characters face to show their expression or reaction. Conversely, long shots tend to emphasise the background or setting and are far away from the character. High angle shots are used to look down at a character; making them look inferior and vulnerable, this is in contrast to a low angle shot as it does the opposite, making the character look superior exaggerating their importance. A point of view shot shows us the characters perspective of their view, towards something or someone. However, medium shots are used so that the setting is shown although the main focus is on the character. Also a big close up is used occasionally to show depth in a character emotion, which adds the build up in tension. In films camera movements such as tracking, panning, steadicam, crane shot zoom, and their effect on the audience link the scenes smoothly together. Zoom is used to show someone or something in detail, this creates attention as the camera is magnifying on to something. Tracking is when the camera is smoothly being moved with, towards or away from a character this helps the audience feel involved and drawn closer to what’s happening in the film, on the other hand a camera can also do the opposite to smooth by being jerky, jumpy and unsteady; this creates a feeling of chaos and confusion, this is known as steadicam. Panning is used to follow a moving object or character, or to show more than can fit into a single frame, such as panning across a landscape.  It is also used as a transition between one camera position and another. Crane shot is when the camera moves up or down, as if it were on a physical crane adding depth into the shot.

The lighting in Chicken Run is very important as it brings out the best of the films actions that take place. It is used for a variety of reasons; brings out the characters personality and it can also change the mood of the film.  When we first see Ginger she is shown lit by warm tones of lighting; the connotation of this is that Ginger is innocent and good character, on the other hand, we first see Mrs Tweedie in backlighting with the camera at low angle shot, which immediately gives a sense of a dark and mysterious character ...
