The areas of representation I will be focusing on are the way black Americans are represented in 2-3 Hollywood crime films.

The two films I will be analysing are “Beverley Hills Cop” (1984) and “In The Heat Of The Night”. Both films contain black heroes and both films have been important in different ways, for example “Beverly Hills Cop” helped Eddie Murphy become a mainstream star. “In The Heat Of The Night” won several Oscars even though it was quite controversial. Importantly, Sidney Poitier went on to win the Oscar for his role in this film’s sequel. He was the first black actor to win this award.

Mirisch Company, which is independent, produced “In The Heat Of The Night” but it also had financial backing from a major studio (MGM). This film would be classified as an independent film because it has low production values and mainly targets niche audiences.

“Beverley Hills Cop” (1984) was produced by Paramount studios, which suggests that this film has high production values and is aimed at a mainstream audience. This film would be classified as a high concept film because it uses pre-existing central characters, a universal theme, and a high profile soundtrack and had enough money to use well-known and central characters. “In The Heat Of The Night’s” soundtrack begins with a slow jazz song, which suggests that this film is more dramatic and less action-based. From the soundtrack, the audience wouldn’t be able to tell that this is a crime film because it is slow. On the other hand, “Beverly Hills Cop” has a fast soundtrack, which catches the audience’s attention very quickly. The soundtrack opens with a popular song that audiences would know. This helps to raise their expectation for all exciting action-packed film. The establishing shot in “In The Heat Of The Night” we start of in a café it looks very dirty as an officer leaves the café we are taken around the place. It looks very dirty and is very muddy as the streets are deserted it doesn’t look as there are many people living here. This seems to be a small town rather than a big city.

For many, Mississippi is well known for its rejection of the civil rights movement. Firstly the long close up of the town sign, Sparta, Mississippi draws the audience’s attention to the films setting and makes them think about its importance to the story.

The establishing shot in “Beverly Hills Cop” which is in Detroit is that we are shown many people and it seems as they are in poverty most people seem to be working class citizens, buildings in the background are run down there are old factories and most of the population is black. The mise-en-scene of the ...
